The Tijuca Forest in Rio is a GREAT place.

A man-made forest in the middle of the city. It was a bunch of coffee plantations that were confiscated by Emperor Peter II in the 19th century because of unpaid taxes. He then decided to reforest the whole thing and release it to the public.

I've been there a lot of times. GREAT place to bring the kids and have a picnic.

I have pics (nondigital) of me & family in a (The horror! The HORROR!) picnic, but they're buried in a box somewhere with a gazillion other pics. Damned if I can find them.

But I guarantee you the place is as gorgeous as this other person says. If any DUer shows up in Rio I'll give them a tour. That is, provided such DUer doesn't think I suck.

9. Never made it

The first time I visited Brazil was over ten years ago-- February of 1995. The day we wanted to go to Tijuca was the day after Rio got 50 cm of rain (do you remember that storm? cars were literally floating, whole favelas were washed away, they reported 125 people dead, and that's just the people they knew about...).

Anyway, the authorities closed Tijuca on account of too much rain, which we found especially ironic, since it's supposed to be a rain forest...
