Woman says 'McDonald's diet' took off weight

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8916080/

"RALEIGH, N.C. - Inspired by the documentary “Super Size Me,” Merab Morgan decided to give a fast-food-only diet a try. The construction worker and mother of two ate only at McDonald’s for 90 days — and dropped 37 pounds in the process.

It was a vastly different outcome than what happened in the documentary to filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who put on 30 pounds and saw his health deteriorate after 5,000 calories a day of nothing but McDonald’s food.

Morgan, from Raleigh, thought the documentary had unfairly targeted the world’s largest restaurant company, implying that the obese were victims of a careless corporate giant. People are responsible for what they eat, she said, not restaurants. The problem with a McDonald’s-only diet isn’t what’s on the menu, but the choices made from it, she said."

SOunds like a Kroc to me ...

1. I think that I could stay low cal on Mc Donald's
Their big salads only have around 400 calories without dressing. Their low fat dressings are less than 100 calories. A small sandwich without fries does not have many calories either. I think that their breakfast fare is fairly high calories, but there is also the fruit and yogurt salad.
It is not a good long term diet plan, of course, as it is limited in variety.
I can see how someone, especially an active person, could lose weight making good choices at McDonald's.

4. she totally missed the point...
'Morgan, from Raleigh, thought the documentary had unfairly targeted the world’s largest restaurant company, implying that the obese were victims of a careless corporate giant. People are responsible for what they eat, she said, not restaurants.'

that's exactly the point of 'supersize me': the fact that people eat too much of this crap. he didn't absolve personal responsibility, far from. he showed how people AREN'T eating responsibly. eating too much junk food is bad for you period. but he never said that mcdonalds is shoving the food down your throat.

i hate it when people miss the point.

6. Well, actually ...

He does make the point that McDonald's encourages over-consumption of bad food both with their "supersize me" marketing tactic (thus the title) and by being so ubiquitous. Representatives from McDonald's, for example, buy time on local radio stations disguised as interviews to promote inexpensive ways to feed your family three full meals a day ... with McDonald's products, of course.

Of course you are correct that personal responsibility is the main point, and he didn't go as far with criticizing their marketing as he could have, but the marketing is one target.

10. The other purpose of Spurlock's experiment
was to provide actual evidence and data showing that a fast-food only diet is detrimental to one's health. Anecedotal evidence will not stand up in court.

8. How can this even be compared to Spurlock's experiment?

"Morgan used nutritional information downloaded from McDonald’s Web site to create meal plans of no more than 1,400 calories a day. She only ate french fries twice, usually choosing burgers and salads. Those choices are a stark contrast with those made by Spurlock, who ate every menu item at least once."

This is a very different methodology this woman used, so of course she is going to get different results. The fact is though that most people DO eat French Fries at McDonalds, they are probably the top selling item at McDonalds.

This article looks like it was written by McDonalds, and I would not be surprised if it was.
