Hershey bar made in MEXICO?? You have GOT to be shitting me.
I just bought a Hershey bar with Heath toffee bits (new to me, and I KILL for Heath bars)...

Just finished it, and reading the label to torture myself and it says:

"Mfg. in Mexico for Hershey Foods Corporation"

NOT ONLY is this chocolate bar made in MEXICO but it's made by a CONTRACTOR. Hershey doesn't even make it THEMSELVES, they pay somebody else to make it FOR them.

Anyone who thinks the US economy is header for recovery is a TWIT.

1. believe it or not, that might be a good thing, in this case.
you see, as Dr. Helen Caldicott has pointed out, the milk cows close to the Pennsyvania factory eat grass that was exposed to Three-Mile Island radiation. When you eat the Pennsylvania made milk chocolate and caramel, you are possibly exposing yourself to radiation as a result.

I have never touched Hershey chocolate since I heard that.

3. Baloney
You may be exposed to something undesireable but radiation from cows eating radiated grass, it doesn't work that way.

6. I water-skiied in front of TMI both before AND after the accident
I grew up 10 miles from the plant and I ate tons of food grown in that area.

I'm fine.

I respect Dr. Caldicott but I really think she was reaching there

4. Mexican vanilla is the best vanilla in the world, in many people's
opinion. So it sounds like Hershey may actually have improved their product by making it in Mexico. Course they should call it Mexico bar, since it is named after the place of manufacture.

5. That crazy because my brother-in-law makes Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
and they are made in Hershey.

Hershey has plants all over the world, believe me the plants in Hershey are flowing out chocolate

I'm looking at the label right now. Mexico AND the contractor giveawy, "Mfg in Mexico for..."

Your bro-in-law might just be looking forward to getting outsourced.

Hershey manufacturers chocolate all over the globe. Right now Hershey is at full production with the plants built for the original lines of chocolate and even a few new ones added when the expanded. But if you look at the total product line of Hershey believe me, they need additional plants.

11. Lots of candy that used to be made here is made in Mexico now
In the 80's, companies figured out that automation eliminated costly jobs and saved money. By the turn of the century (2000-2001) companies figured out that depressed, unregulated labor across the border and away from the watchful eyes of OSHA and other regulatory agencies was cheaper than automation.

My business subcontracted on just such a job in 2002 (before we knew all the details :blush: that won't happen again) that involved moving a candy manufacturing plant to Mexico - about 100 miles from the border. The plant is semi-automated. Completion involved several weeks in Mexico. The working conditions were pitiful compared to our standards, but it was far and away the best job in that town.

I suspect that they will find over the long term that the plant isn't as profitable as they would have hoped for. The "Protestant Work Ethic" does not exist in Mexico (not a judgement call, just an observation). They will probably have to pay three people to get the same amount of work equivalent to one US worker.

12. The jobs in Mexico have not replace those in Hershey
they are additional plants. Hershey has exploded with the number of varieties of the original chocolate bar that are produced. I think if you go to the Hershey website you'll find that there are Hershey Plants across the globe, not just in Hershey

And I'm pleased to take your word for it.

But the particular project I was involved with closed a candy factory in Chicago and moved it to Mexico. And I know it was not the first nor the last.

That is a good Mexican chocolate confection and besides chocolate comes from the Maya. It seems appropriate that Mexico is making chocolate. Anyhow, as long as what LynnSin says is true then this really shouldn't be a problem.
