1. Interesting.
Looks very much like Trade Gothic. What foundry owns it?

4. If they made highway signs in this font, I'd enjoy driving more
However, I've read some lenghty, but very interesting articles about the massive amounts of time and energy that goes into highway sign fonts. It's really amazing. They do the obligatory user testing, but on top of that go around gas stations and do surveys of lost drivers before and after the slightest of font changes - even down to kerning - and see if the readability improves cognition.

5. Did you ever get into one of those things where
you use one Typeface a lot? I've fallen in love with various ones over the years, where one of the sales reps I created advertising material for, said "could we get away from Adobe Garamond for a while?" :D I think only a design nerd would understand this.

Have you ever used any House Industries Typefaces? I get their catalogs, and just love the SuperBad design aesthetic, but can't get my company to buy any.

6. Unfortunately I don't have a decent cash flow at the moment, so
font buying are events few and far between.

Yes, I have a few favorites, I typically use Alternate Goth Number 3 and compress the lettering as a workaround to get to a font I really like -> Bureau Grotesque :D

I also like Eurostile, big suprise considering my love for Helv N.

Gill Sans is also a good workhorse

7. Love Gill Sans
I don't recall which magazine, (I think it was "How") that used to take a Typeface and analyze the shape, describe its place in typography, and recount the history. I was surprised to learn of the long histories of some font families, such as Gill Sans, and the designer Gill's contributions to fontography.

I don't know if your company would pay for it (mine doesn't--I've gone with a friend) but if you would join AIGA, you'd get treated to lectures and seminars on design that would have your imagination working for days.

11. Panic! I've not any kind of Helvetica at all on my PC!
Why not? I do have about 50 kinds of Arial and Lucida though.

Thanks, Microsoft. :(

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 06:03 PM by primate1
Well, not legally anyway. Though I don't know if taht would explain its absense from Windows. I know Microsoft developed Arial to compete with it.

All Fonts should be free!

Free the fonts!

I hate Arial. Arial can kiss my butt, with its stupid name and its stupid letters....

Um, I think I need a drink.

24. That's the only reason I can see why Apple made further ground
in difference between industry-specific user ratios in design.

Macs do have a lot of good fonts pre-installed, but on the other hand, it does make each license of OS 10.01.01.10.3.032 that much more expensive.

Sort of like how M$ kept the cost of XBOX down by making owners cough up another 20 bucks for the DVD remote. It's an entirely irrelevant piece of hardware, but the 20 bucks covers the cost of the DVD player licensing.

I am aware that the more plebian among us think that the sans serif font is a thing of beauty, but please take into consideration the fact that I am OLD, and it hurts my eyes.

25. Actually, it's been shown that beyond a given point size, as long as
the font face isn't something ridiculous, serifs at smaller font sizes actually make things harder to read.

I'll try that again. Actually, it's been shown that beyond a given point size, as long as the font face isn't something ridiculous, serifs at smaller font sizes actually make things harder to read.

26. Now I need a nap.
My only experience with serif vs. sans serif is in readability issues with small children.

Since the whole desktop publishing thing has become such an incredible venture for some, a lot of the textbooks are in sans serif. That DOES make it hard for a beginning reader to practice fluidity.

That is all.

Instead of a nap, I think I will go downstairs and get a drink.

27. Oh, certainly serifs belong in print, because the dpi can handle it
But again, as long as it's not too small. For example, a pocket bible.
