Need avatar help

I was so moved by this picture of Cindy Sheehan that I want to use it as my avatar. However, when I tried to upload it, the only thing that showed up was a box with a red x. Can someone give me detailed info on how to upload it?

2. DS1 is right, that pic won't look good at all at 48 x 48 pixels.
