I always get somewhat humorous responses. The guy behind the counter said, "I work here and I can't afford it. I'm riding my bike." A girl at the pump laughed and said, "Yeah right." I said, "well, I'm not." We were all smiling though.

Consider trying that line sometime. You may just get some rather interesting responses.

Some people even put higher-octane stuff like airplane fuels in their motorcycles and such for racing, but if you're just commuting to work or getting groceries I don't see the point. Unless your car is pinging with a lower octane or designed with a high octane in mind.

But lets for a moment pretend you do know something about my driving habits. And that I didn't have to point out that while my car has been above 140 mph, it hasn't gone faster than 70 in years. Or that I squeeze out over 30 mpg EVERY SINGLE TANK.

And I haven't had to refuel my car since June 20, because I walk to work and the store, and lump my trips together when I do make them.

but I was not aware that the tax on petrol covers any national health costs. I lived in the UK for 3+ years and had a certain amount per month taken out of my paycheck for national health.
If I am wrong - hopefully some DUer from the UK will give us the true scoop!!
National health is the only way to go here. We're the only "civilized" western country without national health. It's a disgrace.
