I had my 4 month old kitten spayed today and the poor kitten is just
passed out on pain medication.

I know she needed the surgery but I am feeling really bad right now.

The poor kitten just gives me this spaced out look, poor baby.

1. Poor dear
But just imagine how much worse she'd be without the medication. She should be back to herself within a few days, and you'll both be secure in knowing she won't have any unwanted kittens. Best wishes to both of you.

2. If she is not up and back to herself tomorrow get back to the Vet about it
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 10:32 PM by BrklynLiberal
The usual recovery for that is not supposed to be very long.

You did it out of love for her. She will live a longer and healthier life now that she is spayed.

3. The highlight of surgery IS the pain medication!
When my female was spayed she looked awful afterwards.

8. Damn right!
That's half the reason to have any surgery.

11. When I had my wisdom teeth out last year, the pain meds were
fun. I had some big blue pills, I was floating.

15. They actually knocked me out for mine
My Wisdoms we're apparently in a really bad way and the doc said it would not be a normal procedure so they needed to knock me out. On the day of the procedure I went in and they started to give me some laughing gas to, I guess, prepare me for the anesthesia. After they started giving me the laughing gas, they realized that the heart monitoring machine was in the other office and they wouldn't be able to actually knock me out until they had it. So I was waiting there for this thing to arrive - stoned out of my mind and every time I would feel the high start to diminish, I would convince the (very cute) nurse to pump up the Nitrous and she actually kept doing so. It was so much fun. I don't remember much but I do remember that the doctor had a really funny name and the nurse and myself spent about an hour just ripping on the doctor until this thing arrived. It was a really good time and the pain killers they prescribed after kept me happy for a good week.

17.  I was sedated to, all I remember is the Doctor asking me to open my
my mouth wider, and some rock music.

I had a very nice experience, it was worth the extra money.

All my dental work was painless, a good dentist will not hurt you.

4. I know it is the right thing to do but leaving my kitten at clinic this
morning was hard. She was very calm, this is one laid back cat but I was wreck.

5. I just had my puppy spayed, too.
She had laser surgery, which is supposed to shorten the recovery time.

She seems to be recovering okay from that, but I had her dewclaws removed at the same time. She is wearing a big E-collar, which is driving us all crazy. We have to keep the bandages dry on her front feet, besides keeping her from chewing them. If it is wet, she has to wear booties when she goes out. She hates them, and she goose steps in them. She has figured out a way to back out of them, too.

The cat was adjusting well to the puppy, but the E-collar scares her. The cat is living under my bed.

I worried constantly when puppy was in surgery. I will be glad when all the recovery is finished.

7. When I picked up the kitten there two dogs with the E-collars,
they didn't look to happy.

My dog when I had her spayed wanted to go out and chase cats a hour
after I got her home.

The fun part will be keeping the kitten from running and jumping until she recovers, this is a active kitten.

6. Four months is a little young, isn't it?
I thought six months was the usual earliest age to do that.

10. The clinic will only spay a cat that is weighs 3lbs. this kitten weighs
in at 4lbs, she is going to be a big cat.

This kitten has large paws and legs, the Vet said she could grow up to be a 10 lb. cat.

20. Nope, you can and should do it by 3 or 4 months.
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 11:37 PM by friesianrider
I volunteer at a rescue, and our vets always do it at 3 or 4 months, 6 months is really pretty late nowadays. Research has shown that the earlier an animal is spayed or neutered, the faster they recover. Plus, by 6 months, both genders are already plenty capable of reproduction, and of course the idea is to get them done before that sets in ;) Plus, especially with the males, if you do it closer to 3 or 4 months, there is less chance of them learning how to "spray" (which definitely sucks, as any kitty owner can tell you! )

27. Another reason for spaying cats or dogs young is to avoid
breast cancer. If it is done before six months, the danger of that cancer is removed.

9. My boy kitten is 5 months.
And set to be neutered next week. He is a wild thing, fearless, and I do hope it cools his jets. Surgery on the males is much less invasive (duh!). I feel a little bad but is must be done.

13. I have male cat that is about 10 years old now, he would never have
lived this long with the surgery. His brother who I could not catch or trap didn't last long, all the cats fights really add up.

I'm so happy so many here on DU are so responsible to get their fur babies neutered/spayed at the right time. You guys are awesome!

12. Don't freak out when she does the eye thing...
like the buggy guy in Men in Black. Cats have that extra eyelid thingy and you rarely see it, but when they are dopey after surgery, you'll see that double eyelid blink. Weird.

P.S. It won't last long, and what a kindness you have done for her and the many homeless starving kittens she won't have.

14. She did that when woke up, it is weird.
Dell (the kitten) is sleeping more relaxed now, she drank a little water and is sleeping in normal position.

My dog can't be in the room with her, just look though the gate and she is not happy, the kitten was like her baby. I had to take the kitten from the mother so the kitten wouldn't be feral, and my dog just took over.

The mother just took off, I would have liked to catch and had her spayed to.

16. Hey, gf . . .
Dell will be better soon; just keep an eye on her so that she doesn't hurt herself before the pain meds wear off, and be ready to take her back to the vet if anything appears amiss.

You'll be OK, too.

18. Hey Heidi, thanks for the hug.
My pets are like my babies, it is hard to see them in pain.

Tonight is the easy part, when Dell feels better then it gets fun.

I do miss her, she sits on the computer desk trying to help me type.

Dell is looking better, but I am going to stay up and keep an eye on her.

19. Good for you!
:yourock:

You did it an an early age, which is AWESOME, because your little girl will recover quicker and will be MUCH better off health-wise for it, and so will you knowing you're stopping the killing in animal shelters.

She'll be back to normal in no time, I promise. Just keep an eye on her and if you notice any goo coming from the incision or she is not eating, give your vet a call.

You're awesome for spaying/neutering!

24. Aww, I know how that is.
Have you tried a humane trap to get her?

I have 3 of them and have been trapping neighborhood strays and getting them fixed. Thankfully all our SPCAs here offer low-cost spay/neuter programs, so it has obviously cost some $ but it's worth it. So many beautiful, healthy, playful, loving kitties in our shelter and so precious few good homes. :(

We have a lot of them here, I have a possum living under my storage shed.

28. When Althea was spayed, she was groggy the first day, mobile the second
and back to her normal loving self on the third (the growing back of belly fur took a little while longer :)).

DOn't worry, she'll be fine.
