It's taken until now for me to be able to read all of the post on this thread ... I couldn't bring myself to answer all of you because each hug, every word of compassion hurt as much as it helped.

Thanks for showing my family a very special 'love' ~ Democratic Underground Love

When I took Bronson's father for his first set of puppy shots - the vet told me about having just said 'good bye' to her 8 year old Golden. Every day spent with our beloved companions are gifts to our heart.

Tribute To A Dog

The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

George Graham Vest - c. 1855

11. RIP, Bronson..
I know how you feel.. Nothing makes it go away, but time helps heal you.. We lost our Skunkie (kitty) last month. I delivered him, dried him off, cut his cord and even breathed into him, when he didn't breathe right away..

Mother Nature's cruel trick on us animal lovers.. She gives them to us to love, but never really lets go of them..She always claims them back before we're ready to let them go:cry:

16. Oh Joan, I am so very sorry for your loss
 Here is a passage from the Upanishads that I found comfort in when I lost Ranger two years ago:

The dreaming mind recalls past impressions.
It sees again what has been seen; it hears
Again what has been heard, enjoys again
What has been enjoyed in many places.
Seen and unseen, heard and unheard, enjoyed
And unenjoyed, the real and the unreal,
The mind sees all; the mind sees all.

-Prashna Upanishad

I hope all the good memories you have of your sweet Bronson will ease the grief you have today.

I know how you feel right now. We suddenly lost Ed, our spaniel mix, last Monday morning, about this time. He was only five, we also knew that day would come, but not so soon. The numbness is slightly wearing off, but there are a lot of empty places in our house right now.

Hugs to you Joan:hug:

32. We're in the same situation
My Corgi,s life also ended yesterday (Sunday). She lived from 4/11/99 - 8/14/05 and she died from cancer. It's almost 10:00pm so I'm going over to the Rainbows Bridge website to do the Monday night candle ceremony for my sweet dog. I've got the candles, the matches, and the kleenex all ready. This has been really rough - I've had a headache all day from crying so much, but I know it's important to go through the grief.

My pets that are gone still bring tears of the joy of having had them in my life, and tears for the sadness in lissing them.
We are so lucky to have pets that love us unconditionally, and that evoke the same in us.

44. I'm so very sorry. I bet he was a great Goldie.
But all our babies are great, aren't they? No matter how long they're with us, it's never long enough, but it sounds like Bronson's exit was particularly premature. Even though he was only here 6 1/2 years, I bet he left you with a lifetime of warm memories to hold on to.

I'm sorry he's gone.

Peace

76. So sorry to hear about Bronson
I lost my 5 year old cocker spaniel, Magic, at the end of June. It still hurts to talk about. I got a check from his pet insurance today and I was crying all over again. I understand how it will take time to get past the grief and just remember the good times, especially when they go so young, so unexpectedly.

Hugs to you,
Bella

104. Goodbye Bronson
Three years ago we lost Jake our firt Golden Retriever. I remember curling up with him on the floor of the emergency clinic where we had taken him after he had a massive stroke. He was eleven. I laid with him for thirty minutes and then the final decision, it was so hard. I was with him when the doctor gave him the drug that ended his life and I stayed with him for another thirty minutes after he was gone. I stroked his head and told him how much we loved him and reminded him of all the great and wonderful momements we shared. Tears are coming even as I type this --- it is the most difficult of moments, but I cherish my time with him. He was a wonderful dog.

We now have two Goldens --- Murphy the goofball and Devon the tomboy. They are young and crazy, but each time I look at them I know what love really means. Take care and know that you are not alone in your grief.

It was with great kindness that Bronson passed peacefully.

I was spared the very painful decision to bring an end to suffering as we did with Bronson's father Byron on 7/30/01 after a prolonged illness. I sat in the shade with Byron daily for 3 months, for as long as he was able to walk about enjoying his days. On the morning that Cherie and Jon carried Byron to the car for his final ride . . . the hummingbirds that had been our companions since their return in the Spring flew along with Byron for one last visit before we drove away. My Lord Byron was the beginning, it's only fitting that Byron had a Hummingbird escort in his final hours. We sat with him beyond his last gentle breath, assisted by a kind and compassionate veterinarian. Byron was cremated, his ashes are in an urn along with a statue of Quan Yin carved from Amethyst.

Thank you for sharing your pain over the loss of your beloved Jake. I wish you the very best with Murphy and Devon . . . may they both live long, happy, healthy lives!

111. I'm so sorry to hear that - it's always sad
when a beloved friend (human or animal) passes - especially one so young.

My mother received word from the vet yesterday that her Scottish Terrier (my avatar) has lymphoma - not sure if it's in the early stages but the prognosis is reasonable - perhaps 12 months or so. However she'll be 13 in a couple of weeks so she's had a good run. She's in excellent health otherwise so who knows ??

I don't care what anybody says - pets are people too.......

the mortal coil is what it is

Those of us who are fortunate to know love also feel the pains of loss ... I wouldn't have wanted to miss one day of his very special existence.

I'll never forget that he was always filled with love! He - unlike his sisters was alert to welcome us back home at the end of each day. I'll never be able to follow my driveway around the last curve home without remembering him.

Bronson was the pick of the litter and was to live with a local family which had 3 little girls, they would have loved to run and play together. However the family delayed taking him home, then changed their minds about adopting him. I felt it was too late to find a new family for him so he remained here.

I thought Bronson would be the last one standing but that was not to be. We are still blessed by the love of his mother and two sisters. After they join Bronson, we may become a home without a furry bundle of love as I'm not willing to risk the life of my featherhead by bringing home a puppy.

Please give your little ones an extra hug for me, Rhiannon.

Joani
