If someone sent you an inappropriate private message, PLEASE ALERT.

I have now heard, both directly and though the grapevine, that a particular member of DU has sent EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE private messages to a number of members of this website. People are asking why I haven't done anything about it.

I promise you... If someone has done what is alleged, they will be banned immediately. But I cannot ban anyone unless I actually see the evidence.

Presumably, if this has happened to *many* people, then one person could just click the little alert link on one of these private messages so I can see it.

We are getting alerts and messages asking why this person hasn't been banned yet. The reason this person has not been banned is because nobody has yet clicked the Alert link on any of these offensive messages. I cannot ban someone for behavior that I have not seen.

As I said, we consider this alleged behavior to be completely inappropriate. Please help us deal with the problem by clicking alert.

as i have also heard both sides of this...and for the record, as so many people know who this is about, i think it kinda sucks to make it so public like this...it's almost like a public shaming, or something.

This whole situation has me so angry I could spit nails. I found out today people are apparently saying I'm the one who needs to be hitting alert...which is pretty goddanm funny since no one ever bothered to ask me whether I recieved the pm in question or not.

And futhermore, my credibility is on the line here. Many people are wondering why I have not banned a creep who is allegedly engaging in extremely dubious behavior.

At this point, I know only one name of someone who claims to have received such a message. I asked her to alert and so far she has not.

Since the rumour says that these pictures have been sent -- unsolicited -- to many people, I don't understand why nobody has yet alerted these private messages. As I said... I consider this extremely serious, and I want to get to the bottom of it. But I would not know who to contact because at this point I don't know the names of *any* of the people who allegedly have received these private messages.

If the allegation turns out to be true, then I suppose this is a public shaming. But if it turns out that nobody clicks alert, then this might turn out to be a public vindication for the person who is accused.

But we can easily get to the bottom of this if someone -- anyone -- clicks alert. And if nobody clicks alert, then I don't know what to say.

This thread has been open for more than an hour, which should be more than enough time for my message to get to any people who need to hear it.

For the record, right now I believe the accusation that someone has sent unsolicited naked pictures to many members of this website is not true. Since this rumor started last week, I have not received any alerts at all that substantiate the rumor, even though I have specifically asked that people do so. Even after this thread has been open for an hour, none of the "many" DUers who are alleged to have received such a private message has yet hit alert on it. Lacking any evidence whatsoever, at this point I am forced to conclude that the rumor probably is either false or totally out of context.

At this point, it is my opinion that the accused individual has been vindicated.

If someone does click alert at any point, then my opinion might change. But until and unless someone provides me with a shred of evidence, I believe that the rumor is most likely not true.

If anyone reading this thread has access to any information that might shed some light on this, please contact me directly. And if you know of anyone who was on the receiving end of the alleged behavior, please let them know that Skinner wants to hear from them. I have little doubt that you all will pass along my message to anyone and everyone who needs to see it.

Now I'm locking this thread. And we aren't going to permit any more threads about this topic.
