7. In Memoriam
In Memoriam

Elvis, what happened?
What happened was you died
You showed us how to live and then you died
And it was not a pretty sight

And you made us feel like fools for believing what we saw
Like how you loved religion and how you loved your ma
And Dr. Nick, that evil prick, for all that thorazine
And Colonel Parker kept his hand at making things look clean
Your acting out a public life was better than your films
Colonel Parker took your hand, and he catered to your whims
You let him be your teddy bear and he made you Frankenstein
And then you died, you stupid ass, and left it all behind

Well, Elvis, what happened?
What happened was you died
But thanks to RCA we still get pieces of the pie
You multiplied

It must have done your dad some good, 'cause he seemed to egg you on
'Til you tantalize in glory until all of you was gone
And adoration was a burden, and the public was a wraith
You must have died one tortured soul for having so much faith

Elvis, what happened?
What happened was you died
You showed us how to live and then you died
And it was not a pretty sight

But I still visit Graceland whenever I'm in town
And up the walk and through the gates and I lay my flowers down
Among the thousand million garlands that are laying on the ground
And wish that you could be here with us to see what we're going through
When we read that Goldman book and we think we misread you
And then you died like Lenny Bruce after he'd given up his chase
I only wish you were around to see the look on all the faces

When they say

Elvis, what happened?
What happened was you died
You showed us how to live and then you died
And it was not a pretty sight

Elvis, what happened?
What happened was you died
You showed us how to live and then you died
And it was not a pretty sight

Song written 1985 by "Mr. Bonus", appeared on the compilation album Luxury Condos Coming To Your Neighborhood Soon.

14. Cool lyrics!!!
Elvis died on my 8th birthday. back at school that fall, damn near every kid was wearing a new "Elvis-- The King Lives On" t-shirt.

of course, we barely knew who he was, most of us being members in good standing of the KISS ARMY :silly:

12. no longer respirating?
at least that's the clinical definition, IIRC :+

and i agree, i'd take a crappy record by Elvis over a "good" record by Britney Spears

13. Elvis died in the army...
Said John Lennon on hearing the news...but Early Sun Records Elvis; he was a killer!

She drew out all her money from the Southern Trust
And put her little boy on a Greyhound Bus
Leaving Memphis with a guitar in his hand
On a one-way ticket to the promised land
Hey little girl with the red dress on
There's party tonight down in Memphis down
I'll be going down there if you need a ride
The man on the radio says Elvis Presley's died

We drove down into Memphis, the sky was hard and black
Up over the ridge came a white Cadillac
They'd drawn out all his money and they laid him in the back
A woman cried from the roadside "Ah he's gone, he's gone"
They found him slumped up against the drain
With a whole lot of trouble running through his veins
Bye-bye Johnny
Johnny bye-bye
You didn't have to die
You didn't have to die

23. A poem I wrote about that day...
Albin's Drugs

This I recall from a day in
August of 'seventy-seven:
Hollywood Way and Magnolia
Boulevard meet a few blocks from
here, in the city of Burbank.
Now there's a Thrifty, but once the
name of the store on the southeast
corner - a drugstore - was Albin's.
Then, long ago, in the summer,
Danny O'Heron had many
flyers he needed delivered.
Placing the flyers on people's
cars, homes and lawns was my job. I
stopped to get lunch at the in-store
counter at Albin's. I heard a
customer taunting the waitress,
"Elvis, your hero, your lover's
dead." I cared little, as rock for
me had begun with the Beatles.
Elvis had seemed like an old-time
idol, not unlike Sinatra.
That I recall from a day in
August of 'seventy-seven.
