Madonna breaks bones in riding accident

Madonna's 47th birthday celebration was marred when she suffered several broken bones in a horse riding accident at her country home outside London, her publicist told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The superstar was hospitalized with three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken hand, according to Liz Rosenberg, her spokeswoman based in New York.

The accident occurred Tuesday at Ashcombe house, her estate outside of London.

Madonna and an assistant were riding horses, when Madonna, on a new horse she wasn't accustomed to riding, took a tumble. Her children, Rocco and Lourdes, were at the home but were not with their mother at the time, Rosenberg said.

and the broken bone count seems high for a fall off a horse.

how fast was the horse going? That could make a lot of difference in how bad the injuries would be. Still, I couldn't live without milk.

Really sucks. Sounds like she took a nasty fall. She must be in a lot of pain. Poor kid.

13. That's no fun at all

I've been riding all my life and have had and seen some nasty spills. It's no joke to get tossed - most of the time, I've been able to tuck and roll and get away with just bruises but I broke my back six years ago and was fortunate to have no real lasting injury (though I now have painful arthritis in my spine on account of it).

She has my sympathy.

17. I was lucky

It was a very stable compression fracture. I was put in a special back brace and told to do no heavy lifting but I was only out of commission for four months. Actually, I was feeding the horses again within a week and I was on top of one within two months which was admittedly stupid but turned out okay.

it's not a matter of if you get hurt, it's a matter of when and how bad.
