3. I was 5, and visiting my grandmother
who was not a fan. Actually, my parents weren't either. I'm surprised I even knew who he was. I must have, because I can remember it clearly, and I don't think it would have registered otherwise.

4. I was on a 1970's family road trip in the faux wood-paneled station wagon.
We were dining at a Sambo's (gawd-remember those racist restaurants?) in Lake Tahoe. It was the talk of the whole diner.

and the voice I was listening to was mine, as I interrupted regular programming, and read the AP Flash that Elvis was dead. It was no more than 15 seconds from the time the story cleared the wire.

11. Here's a poem that describes it:
Albin's Drugs

This I recall from a day in
August of 'seventy-seven:
Hollywood Way and Magnolia
Boulevard meet a few blocks from
here, in the city of Burbank.
Now there's a Thrifty, but once the
name of the store on the southeast
corner - a drugstore - was Albin's.
Then, long ago, in the summer,
Danny O'Heron had many
flyers he needed delivered.
Placing the flyers on people's
cars, homes and lawns was my job. I
stopped to get lunch at the in-store
counter at Albin's. I heard a
customer taunting the waitress,
"Elvis, your hero, your lover's
dead." I cared little, as rock for
me had begun with the Beatles.
Elvis had seemed like an old-time
idol, not unlike Sinatra.
That I recall from a day in
August of 'seventy-seven.

12. I was attending a summer session at the University of Hawaii
before taking off for my first stay in Japan. (Yeah, I know. Real hardship, huh?)

I was coming out of some meal or other (I forget which one) at the East-West Center cafeteria when I noticed the headline in the newspaper dispenser.

I was in my twenties.

15. I was on a bus coming home from Girl Scount Day Camp
And I cruelly said I was glad he was dead cause I hated his music

Of course it was wrong to think anyone being dead was good but I was never an Elvis fan

16. Grandparents' house in Fort Myers, FL
I'd generally go down there during summer vacation.

It was the headline in the Ft. Myers News-Press that they had delivered every moring: "King of Rock dies".

Grandpa was more interested in his crossword. Years earlier he had infamously warned Mom against listening to "that fat-lipped n----r music". Really.
