Our dog seems upset with us (Just got back from dental work)
We took him in this morning. He is a 11 year old American eskimo. He had his teeth cleaned and a couple removed. He was put under anestetic. He was already agitated before we took him since we were instructed not to let him eat after 8 p.m.
When I picked him up, he seemed to be excited to leave the vets but not to see me. He isn't wagging his tail since he's been home like usual. He didn't seem interested in seeing my husband who is his best buddy either. He has drank a lot of water, but hasn't eaten even though he seemed like he was starving this morning.
I am hoping that he is just tired from the procedure even though the vet said that he woke up quickly after it and seemed to have a lot of energy. He is usually a very affectionate, loving dog.

1. His teeth probably hurt. When we have our cats' teeth done, they
are always kinda f'd up for a few days, even though they are very affectionate. Keep an eye on him and call the vet if he isn't better by morning.

2. Maybe some after effects of the anesthetic take a while to wear off

3. Our dog had a gum tumor removed and teeth cleaned
a few months ago. She was pretty withdrawn and unhappy for awhile. Tomorrow will be a better day and the next will be even better.

4. His teeth probably hurt.
I had my wisdom teeth pulled a couple weeks ago and my face was in a lot of pain for days afterwards.

6. The vet said to expect some pain.
And yes, as the novacaine was still in effect I was wagging my tail. But once that wore off I was curled up in the corner whimpering.

7. Did your vet give you any pain meds?
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 06:16 PM by BattyDem
When my dog had a tooth pulled, I gave him pain medication after the novacaine wore off. It helped a lot. He would whimper and become very distant just as the meds would wear off, but as soon as he got another dose, he would act normal again. He was only on the meds for about 2-3 days. :-)

8. No
They said that he shouldn't need any because the teeth were relatively loose and easy to remove. I would think that there would be pain anyway though. They only gave him antibiotics.
He's sleeping right now. I hope that the rest will help him.
