I'll walk to work in the mornings...early mornings...and I'll see some people sleeping in the doorways of stores...their personal belongings...all of the things that they own...with them. And I feel...such sadness. In a country as prosperous as the United States...to see people so down on their luck...it's heartbreaking.

And to read of some people who "hate" the homeless. Unfuckingbelievable. Hate the people who have created such a disparity of wealth in this country. Hate the people who have helped ship millions of jobs out of this country. Hate the people that don't seem to give a damn about the homeless. But, fuck...don't hate the homeless themselves. :grr:

I think hating the homeless is tantamount to racism or sexism...hating a class of people for something beyond their control.

I mean do you think any of them like sleeping in doorways???

But...I have seen living in SF turn the most bleeding heart of liberal into a staunch conservative when it comes to the homeless. The homeless are treated like crap, and in turn they lash out and are extremely aggressive in panhandling. It unnerves a lot of SFers and they respond to anger with hate....

But this is never an excuse. There is no excuse for hate.

54. I didn't read all of the responses to the thread...so I may be talking

out of my rear-end.

I remember being young (I know not an excuse) and still living at home with Mom & Dad with all my earthly needs met and several indulgences being provided on a regular basis. I remember wondering why other kids at school didn't just save up to buy a car to drive to school...or why others didn't bathe or wash their clothes regularly...or why they didn't buy new and in style clothes...(Was a I a jerk or what).

After 20 years and living through single motherhood - no job at times - bumping from one apartment to another before my son was born - and LOTS of help from Mom and Dad after my divorce. I am thankful daily that I have enough to live off from day-to-day and worry endlessly about the fact that one tragic event could send me to the streets as well.

Sitting Bull was in the touring company of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He was constantly booed and hissed while onstage wearing his Sioux headdress and regalia (as Indians were at the time considered to be the enemies of Great White Men), but despite this, he stayed on the tour for a year out of respect for the show's star female, Annie Oakley. Working at a job he hated, he gave most of his $50 a week paycheck to street urchins and bootblacks. He was unable to understand how wealthy white men could allow such poverty to exist.
