Why (warning RANT)
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 10:23 PM by KitchenWitch
Why is it when someone on here asks a Windows computer question, all the Mac and Linux people line up to say snarky shit like "Throw your computer away and get a Mac" or "Change your operating system"?

It is fucking sickening. And NOT HELPFUL at all!

edited to warn folks that this is a rant.

5. We're deranged, single, desperate geeks who want attention badly.
Well, that's my excuse...

Actually, most of us know enough of the intricacies of Windows to know the bad easily outweigh any good. (and while no platform is immune to virii, et al, we've also studied Windows and know that it is far more welcoming TO hackers by design; which in of itself assumes people won't do nasty things. Microsoft has a history of being sneaky, greedy, and sloppy... Gates may be loved for his donations to his tax shelter Foundation, but how he gets his money is hardly any better than how a drug dealer does.)

I was even complaining about Windows 3.0's .ini files and when Win95 came out I was shocked to hear they'd done a one-up on .ini files, in the form of the registry. (so this suggests how far back I go, and even then I go back to the era of the Vic 20 and prior. Computers didn't have fancy GUIs and even home users :wow: could use them without going nuts. What the hell happened between then and now that consumers got so dumb?!)

Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 10:57 PM by WCGreen
because they are lax, lazy and over bloated....

Or because more people are using Windows and that the people who design bugs, and virus's and worms and such not want to draw attention to there cleverness...

Now I ask you, would you want to star in New York City, on Broadway, or play in some one horse town in Idaho....

Cause that's about the market share difference between windows and Linex....

Mac might be something like Des Moines to New York... Maybe or maybe Canton Ohio or Toledo... or maybe even Battle Creek Michigan....

SNARK

going to lie to you or act superior or anything like that. Right?

But these people are offering good, solid advice. Did you know that, according to a study run recently by a well-known technology magazine, if a Windows computer with no antivirus software or firewall is simply connected to the internet without even opening a browser, or going to even one website, or doing anything at all, the average time before it gets infected by a virus is twenty minutes?

It's the truth. I am NOT at all a fan of Apple as a company, nor especially of Steve Jobs as a person, and I absolutely LOATHE the latest versions of Mac system software.

But I'd give up using a computer if had to use Windows. It's far, far more trouble than it's worth.

OK? These people are giving you good advice. Listen to them, instead of just lashing out. I'm telling you this as a friend.

19. As did Amiga- and Linux- folks' self-righteousness. But consider this:
Of course, our favored platforms continue to get whittled away to ZERO while a slop-artist's pigshit continues to be emboldened by sales doesn't make us happier either.

And more and more tech-oriented people are going to stop talking altogether. We know that in a proper reality Windows wouldn't have ever gotten on the market; those controlling it kept away from a sane society. We also know that, as with drug addicts, there comes a time when people are contended with what they have. It gets tiring helping people who don't even want to help themselves. For a better analogy, I may as well hand out free cigarettes to people addicted to Marlboros.

Indeed, with best buy and other big companies offering more and more support services, why bother? Windows users obviously don't mind getting shit service and then whining about it for days afterward (trust me, those places SUCK ELEPHANT ANUS). And if I tried going into the PC support biz, it wouldn't be long before one of the big boys moves in and takes over. That's one of the little downfalls of our system; the big exterminate the small in order to get all the sales and once they become dominant they can be as ludicrous as they want. That's the system, take it or leave it. Nobody wants to actively make change for the better. I give up.

I still sporadically help Windows users; but let's face it: Should Vista sell well I'm through. Period. Let the hackers have a field day. People still buy into the empty hype and don't ask or demand change. Just new features; only some of which ever get fixed...

And i have a hard time doing that belive me. A properly configured firewall and a trip to Windows Update will fix that. It's not so hard to secure windows, people just need to learn basic computer security skills along with the other computer stuff.

15. Indeed. Mac OS X is actually a modified version of FreeBSD. And THAT is
why Apple could switch to Intel's CPUs so cost efficiently.

And I applaud Apple for finally contributing back IN to open source what other companies don't bother to do at all (typical damn leeches; take and not give back... what a way to run a society.)

But even then, FreeBSD and Fedora Core Linux and free. Just download and install. Other distros off-the-shelf can be bought but their "support" can be a bit sleazy too, so watch out...

BTW: It would take less time for that PC you mentioned to get infected than it would take a pizza delivery boy to arrive at your domicile!

25. I really don't think these comments are intended as advice
Now, if someone w/o a computer asked what to buy, that would be one thing, but when someone who is already invested asks about a specific problem, the "trash it" answer is pure snark. It's like if someone asked how to replace the fuel pump in a Honda, and the answer was "Hondas suck - get a Ford." Totally unhelpful, really irritating, and basically meant only to make the snarker feel good about themselves. (However, I will admit that when my Mac using colleagues can't figure out how something works, I snark twice and laugh my way down the hallway...)

9. It is unhelpful
but I expected it, having seen it before. I just have to say that a Mac is totally impractical for me. I also have very few problems with my XP machine for a year now. This was an issue with a program that did not have an uninstaller; so I simply deleted all the files and will use a program to clean up the rest. It won't be perfect but it will be good enough.

I think that if everyone had Mac, all the hackers and virus writers would simply adapt and everyone would complain about them. I think they are too expensive and my professors and office all use Windows so I have to, too.

16. Snobbery.
"My operating system is better than yours", etc.

I have 2 OSes installed on my machine, and I use 'em for different things; Windows for general use and gaming, Linux for serious computing...one's not inherently "better" than the other, necessarily, they just have different strengths. And I'm planning on getting a Mac laptop, but that doesn't mean I'll stop using Windows or Linux.

28. On a lighter note, this oldie but goody.
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon".
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release
stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to
buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You
would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause
your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to
reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was
reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on
only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single, "This car has performed an Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

39. Because inwardly the MAC users hate themselves for their lack of ability
to use a computer that doesn't do everything for them and hide all the nasty, technical, computer-based stuff from their sad little minds because they know they can't handle things like "registries" and "directory trees" and "editing .ini files", etc.

The Linux people say it, at least the ones who aren't jumping on the bandwagon and using a new modern graphical interface Linux that isn't any different than windows or the MAC OS, the command prompt Linux people HAVE THE RIGHT to say "throw that goddamn thing away".

Because the command prompt linux guys are, let's all be honest, at the top of the computer geek pyramid.

The MAC people have no leg to stand on at all. They're like the Prius owners with the automatic transmissions yelling at the '65 Mustang owners covered in oil and swearing at their broken timing chain, to "Get a Prius!"

The Linux command-prompt equivalent would be the linux guy yelling at the Mustang guy to "Just burr the goddamn chain down another 0.37 mm you dumbass and pop a fifth of everclear in your gas tank!"
