32. Well, it all started when Barbie came back

from jetsetting in Europe earlier than planned and she found that little tramp Skipper in a nekkid clench with Ken on the sofa of the Malibu Dream House.

She jumped in the pink convertible and drove down to La Jolla at about 110 mph, -until the convertible ran out of gas. She ended up in a greasy dive near the docks where she met a Marine named G.I. Joe. Mistaking Barbie's glow in the dark, crystal, butterfly tiara for the signs of easy virtue, Joe plied Barbie with drinks until he was able to have his way with her and they shacked up in a tawdry little trailer on the beach until Ken came looking for her.

That's when the real trouble began. G.I. Joe and Ken took one look at each other and knew in their hearts that Joe would never be able to ask or tell again. So Joe & Ken went back to the Malibu Dream House to redecorate and adopt some cats together.

Barbie slid into despair for a time, covering her sorrow with Cuba Libras and Mallomars. She'd put on weight and no longer fit in her Barbie Camp Outfit, her Barbie Tennis Kit, and frankly she'd had to let her Barbie Quilted Satin Pajamas out a time or two. She let her less than blonde roots show.

Then one day it all changed for her. She'd been walking the beach at La Jolla when she saw a pod of whales and some whale watchers. She was so intrigued by the creatures that she enrolled at Berkely and earned a PhD in Marine Biology. Now, Barbie has let her blond grow out and is once again a natural brunette, she's gone entirely vegan. She's traded in her high heels for a good sensible pair of Birkenstocks, sold the pink convertible and bought a hybrid, and finds peace in cataloguing whalesong and following orca pods.

Once a year, Barbie and Francie get together for a retreat in the rainforest to nurture their inner goddesses. Barbie votes Democrat.
