Poll question: Vacation time finally approved: what to do?
I've got the 29th through the 6th off of work, meaning I get to sit out TWO production cycles in a row. I'm fucking GIDDY about this - I haven't had any significant time off since I was a full-time freelancer, and I haven't had even a single production day off in two and a half years. And frankly, I've NO clue what the hell to do with myself. Help me decide, good people of the DU Lounge.

1. Well, I like the option of going to some midwestern cities.
And Chicago, I believe, is a midwestern city.

Not to be selfish, but we've got some fine people here. :-)

4. I had a little bet with myself--
that it was going to be either you or BlueJay who said *exactly* that, the only question being who got there first. Mazel tov, terrya! And yeah, it's definitely under consideration - I'm thinking Columbus, then Indianapolis, then Chicago. Depends on what's going on where and when.

2. What's your budget?
The list of things to do in this country is endless if your budget is.

I do recommend visiting the Northwest, but keep on thing in mind: Many northwestern cities are best seen on foot. Your username makes me wonder whether you're up to that :)

8. Budget is low.
I can swing the airfare to Portland (It's only like $300 round-trip from Cleveland), but I'll be crashing with a friend who lives downtown for the duration of my stay, if indeed that's what I choose to do with the time.

And I don't actually have asthma - my username is a loooooong story. :hi:

And in Ohio it is legal to ride one without a helmet. I'm assuming the original poster meant motorcycles.

Ohio has lots of excellent cycling trails!

nothing a flame thrower can't solve.

So I think you should go for option 1 on your vacation. You have been working at this place forever, you need a break. Get out of Cleveland even if it cost some greenbacks.

33. Portland is especially nice if you're a book lover...
Spent way too much of the little time I had in Portland at Powell's City of Books, finding out-of-print used (affordable) books by all my favorite authors.

When the rain let up, wandered over to the artsy area, visited some galleries, glass studios, shops, etc. Noticed they weren't closing at 5 -- low and behold, it was the one night a month they all stayed open late and gave out wine and cheese!

Had an amazing sushi dinner at the counter at Murata. I put it on the expense account, but it might be worth a splurge.

Both options you listed sound fun, but don't stay home. Gas prices and the economy (for us peons) are only going to get worse. Go for the gusto now!!
