3. A few questions:

  • PC or MAC?
  • iTunes version?
  • available storage on iPod?
  • Would you prefer to listen on your new iPod or your desk/laptop computer?

8. ok
mac for sure
itunes 4.7
not much storage available on the ipod as is but i will have to eliminate some of it so that will happen in time

i would prefer to listen to my ipod through my itunes if i can but want to use both through my computer
i dont have much need to listen to the ipod away from the computer as this is where i spend my time

the ipod is filled and i will keep almost all of it but do want to make enough room to move some of my existing itunes to the ipod

im happy to take one step at a time but would like to know what is possible

thank you for the time and assistance

9. Definitely try iPodRip...
Download, install, launch, connect your iPod, and transfer what you want to transfer. Just make sure you have enough hard drive space on your computer! (Might even be worth investing in a separate external hard drive, dedicated to your iTunes library.)

Enjoy!

12. Do as suggested
Use the iPod Rip. This 3rd party product works.

Check your computer to make sure you have equivalent storage on your desktop to back up your files

download, store and then create new playlists for yourself. Upload your personal content.

Just as an aside, consider downloading and installing the newest version of iTunes, v4.9. It is compatible and can access Podcasts; I listen to Air America with Al Franken that way. Podcasts are free content.

and the battery is charging as we speak

before i can transfer anything i would like to get the material playable on my itunes

15. Greyed out songs are Apple's nod to copyright
Apple designed the iPod and iTunes to only transfer music files one way, from computer -> iPod. This is to prevent people from copying the entire contents of all their friends iPods onto their computer.

17. which makes sense
but what am i missing here

i thought i use ipodrip for that (as long as the material is in compatible form)

i think ill go search for an easy tutorial/overview
because clearly i have no idea

when i see the options such as "import" or "export library" or "consolidate" i am lost
they must be a great help (when you know what youre doing~)

thanks again for your assistance

4. Sounds like you're on a Mac, here's what you need:
http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/application.php?app=iPodRip

It's called iPodRip and it will let you import music from an iPod into your iTunes library. I use it for porting songs from home to work and back, but it's perfect for your application, too.

It should be a free trial, but if you keep using it, support the developers and pay the shareware fee. It's worth it and it's REALLY elegant at what it does.

Congrats on the cool music! Sounds a lot like what's in my iTunes.

14. Not sure if you can play them from the iPod to iTunes
There might be a shareware that allows that, but I'm not sure what that might be. I'd only ever concerned myself with copying the files off the hard drive.

You can try www.versiontracker.com to see what other shareware options might be available (search for iPod), or try www.ilounge.com for everything you ever wanted to know about iPods, but Apple doesn't really want to tell you.

Cheers!
