Now to look up how Gila Basin got it's name...

Seems to be named after the Gila River... which got it's name because it drains the Gila Basin... Gila Bend is named for the Gila River... Gila Wilderness area is named for the Gila Basin... near as I can tell, everything is either named after the River or the Basin, but there's no origin for the word 'Gila'... Gila means 'joy' in Hebrew, but somehow I don't think Navite Americans nor Spanish explorers would use a Hebrew word to name something... Babelfish doesn't translate it to or from Spainish... I'm guessing it's a Native American word, but you got me.

I couldn't find anything from the Spanish either - interesting. Hebrew wouldn't be completly out of the question for Spain but I bet its a native word as well - now I am really curious (I live in the greater Gila watershed so I just gotta find out!)
