So in Japan, that means it's time to cut the televised broadcast of the ball game and switch to the regularly scheduled program, which last night was a bunch of mimes making Japanese alphabet letters with their bodies.

9. Namath versus Lamonica. it was a great game
the AFL was more fun to watch than the NFL in those days. they had much better passing quarterbacks.

10. I think the old AFL games are STILL more fun to watch than
current NFL games - no big mystery why it is called the No Fun League.

12. May be too much info but here.
http://www.nfl.com/news/mostmemorable10.html

The event now known as the Heidi Game featured a most remarkable ending. But what earned it a spot in sporting lore — and 10th place among the Most Memorable NFL Games of the Century — is the fact that most of the nation was not allowed to see that conclusion. After the Jets' Jim Turner kicked a field goal to give his team a 32-29 lead with 1:05 to play, NBC went to a commercial. When the network returned, it was not to a taut battle of American Football League heavyweights. It was to "Heidi," that pig-tailed Alpine goat-herder, as played by Jennifer Edwards in a made-for-TV premiere movie.

Time out for a little contextual set-up: The Jets and Raiders were the class of the AFL. Each was 7-2 coming into this showdown at the Oakland Coliseum. More than that, their games had blossomed into hatefests, full of late hits and bloody noses. This one was not a disappointment.

The Heidi Game featured five lead changes and a dizzying show of aerial acrobatics. Namath passed for 381 yards and a touchdown, Lamonica for 311 yards and four touchdowns. Maynard caught 10 passes for 228 yards. The game also included 19 penalties for 238 yards.

13. OK, thanks-- and yes, Japan has "Heidi" games-- all the time
I was just watching one today-- High school baseball semifinal game at Koshien (the BIG summer baseball event in Japan), and one team had just taken the lead in the late innings, with the other team up to bat with a runner at second and nobody out, and at exactly 1:05, in the middle of a pitch, they switched to the 5-minute "Sign-language News", and then on to the regularly scheduled drama.

4. He's gone back to the States to treat his right shoulder
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 12:37 AM by Art_from_Ark
Although he was leading the team with 27 home runs, his two-year contract runs out this year, he's 36 years old, and the Giants are seeking to rebuild their team with younger players.

So Tuffy's Japanese baseball career looks to be all but finished.

5. That's too bad
He had a really nice run there, and did better than most of the imports coming to Japan..

6. The Giants are having a lousy season this year
They're in 5th place (out of 6 teams), quite unusual for them, and I guess they just don't have the patience to deal with older injured players.
