Bloody hell. Stabbing ear pain. Again.
I went to the doctor two weeks ago and was diagnosed with a double ear infection and a sinus infection. He put me on a 10-day course of antibiotics, and it cleared up. By Monday, the ear pain was gone, pressure and hearing were close to normal.

It's back in my left ear with a vengeance. And my right ear is itching, meaning it's not far behind.

Dammit.

(No, mods, this isn't a "should I see a doctor?" post -- I'll be there first thing when the clinic opens. I'm venting.)

1. I feel for you eyesroll
I had ear infectons when I was a kid and I suffered terribly - I still remember the "drum beat" in my ear and the accompanying misery....outside of doctor visits my dad would give me a heating pad and a bottle of 7-Up (back then apparently 7-Up was medicine). :)

adult. This is the first time one's seemed to recur (in adulthood). Although the Advil seems to be kicking in (takes the edge off) and maybe I'll get a couple more hours of sleep.

Thanks.

keep you re-hydrated from any fever (I am fluent in home remedies).

plus the added bonus of getting a soft drink treat (money was pretty tight in those days, lots of brothers) I'm sure contributed to helping me feel better :)

3. Could it be a wax problem?
I got prescribed antibiotics for an extreme wax build-up once. (The pain! The pain!) Couldn't understand how that mistake was made at the time. Just saying it's possible.

I'd try warm oil until I got to the doctor.

10. Warmed olive oil with minced garlic in it. No kidding! Garlic has
anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.

When I feel like I'm going to get a cold, I take a couple of cloves of
garlic (cut the sharp ends off first!), just swallow 'em like a pill.
And I never get sick.

7. I feel for you.
A severe ear infection sent me to the emergency room a few years ago. It took 4 courses of antibiotics over 8 weeks to get rid of it. Last year it came back, but I was smart enough to get to the doctor a little bit earlier so that it didn't land me in the ER again. My doctor sent me to an ENT specialist for that one.

Good luck.

12. I empathize.
That hurts. Over a decade ago, I had chronic ear infections for a long time. Those that felt as though I had ice picks intruding into my skull through my ears.

After being on and off those antibiotics the bacteria had pretty much set up condiminiums in my ears, and had become resistant to the antibiotics.

Finally, I discovered tinctures of mullein oil, echinacea and garlic in varying combinations from health food stores. As soon as my ear stated tickling, I'd use them. That abated the symptoms of severity. Then a friend who is an acupuncturist treated me and drained the crap out of my ears by applying two needles to either side of my neck and all the crap drained out and was dissapated. I haven't had one since and that was eons ago.

I wish you well and hope you'll seek out treatment that works for you before you sustain any permanant damage.

Feel better.

Will the ear infection keep you off the waterways & out of your kayak ... that would be a real bummer.

;-)

(I think you've got a case of mistaken identity.)

Odd update -- I woke up again at 6 and the pain was/is totally gone -- just a little residual tinnitus. So I'll wait and see for now.

22. I just explained it this way ... to Heidi
I so totally zoned out last night ~ ~ ~ with ... 3 drops of 'Palmarosa = Cymbopogon martinii' essential oil (neat) directly over my heart ... Enya 'tempus vernum' quietly on replay all night long ... it was my form of guided meditation *totally awesome* ... I'm still feeling mellow

I need more music and lots more because I don't believe all of me has returned from last nights journey under the beautiful moonlight

My ear infection is clearing up. I am also on a 10 day course of antibiotics. I hope that mine doesn't come back. That really sucks! What antibioitcs were you on if you don't mind me asking?

17. Big honkin' amoxicillin tabs.
Same as it ever was, except the dose was much bigger this time.

The pain's gone now, but I've regressed a few days in the hearing/stuffiness department. I'll hit the doc on Monday if it doesn't clear up again on its own, or the walk-in clinic sooner if it gets worse.

21. Pain Is A Drag, Ain't It?
I can certainly empathize. Stupid MS has had me in pain for nearly 11 years. Then i have a few good days, and makes me feel hopeful. Suddenly, WHAM! The searing, burning pain and the muscle stiffness is back full force.

Pain coming back after you think you're past it is a bummer? Vent away.

24. Old remedies.
A few drops of oil of cloves warmed up and placed in your ear canal
helps alleviate pain (plus it smells nice).

A few drops of hydrogen peroxide helps clean out ear wax (the fizzing action is weird).
