Apartment dwelling cat owners: A question.

Am I out of line to expect my cat-owning neighbor to put their used kitty litter in a bag instead of just dumping the tray in the community garbage can?

1. ABSOLUTELY NOT

we have a rule in my building: if you dump the litter in a paper bag, you also have to put that into a plastic bag. apparently, if the used litter seeps to the bottom of the dumpster, it rusts it out.

proper ettiquette says use a bag. at least one.

2. That's not unreasonable...

I live in an apartment and when I clean out my cats litter, I always put it in a trash bag and then to the dumpster I go. I've never carried that box all the way to the dumpster to empty it. *YUCK* I don't want to have to smell that stuff any longer than I have to!

I always put my litter in a double bag, and Im not an apartment dweller, I dont want to smell it and Im sure the garbage men dont want to smell it. They can get kitty liners for the litter pan or they can get an automatic pan that scoops it into a cartridge.

I put my kitty litter in a sealed bag. I do the same with the dog poop. It's common courtesey (sp).

what moran carries the whole try down to the trash anyway? I just clean mine, put the by-products into a plastic bag, and take THAT to the trash

6. Check w/ your local Board of Health to inquire if THEY have . . .

Check w/ your local Board of Health to inquire if THEY have . . . local ordinances (municipal laws) against doing this; and check your local town/city agency that collects the trash to inquire if THEY have any ordinances (municipal laws) against doing this. You might want to check your state laws as well. After finding out, complain to your neighbor (politely, of course). If nothing happens, then complain in writing to your landlord. Caveat: know full well that you may be jeopardizing your own tenancy by doing any of this. However, this is true of any complaint filed by a tenant despite laws against retaliation.

7. Not out of line at all.

Not only could the used litter be harmful to people, it could also cause illness in the other cats who live in the neighborhood, especially if your neighbor's cat is a carrier for anything. I contain my cats' litter, just like I contain anything else that would have bodily fluids...tissues, dirty diapers, etc.

I've already had to deal with them about noise. My landlord's on my side in general, but I don't want to seem like I'm out to get 'em.

Maybe I can talk the crochety old guy upstairs into lodging a complaint...
