Question regarding music download service subscriptions:
I like older music; 60s, 70s, 80s, mostly 70s R&B.

Do any of them have a good selection of these types of music?

I have love my iPod, but my music collection is wofully inadequate without help.

I'm also interested in audiobooks and would appreciate any advice concerning download sites for them, too.

Thanks.

1. Check into Rhaposdy...
They have a HUGE selection of music and there are a only a few songs I have not been able to find there! Rhapsody is cheaper than iTunes at $0.79 per song to burn to CD.

2. Rhapsody, Audible
There are some free sites too. Or cheap ones.

But if you want audiobooks... definitely Audible.

3. Get a newsreader and go to the newsgroups.
There are tons of groups there with music in all genres. You can even make requests.

Go Here and download Agent.

Use This Link to get easy setup instructions for it.

Boom, you're in. Now just search for .mp3 after the groups have all loaded and choose which groups you like. They have 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, Metal, Rap, Classical or whatever you're into with thousands of titles. Just set it up to download what you want and go about your business. Newsgroups download at your maximum speed so you'll have all you want in a few minutes or hours depending on the amount you download. It's easy, it's fun and it's free. If you can't find what you want send a message to the group with a request and someone will post it within a day usually.

Enjoy.

8. Newsgroups aren't illegal.
As far as I know. I don't think they are under any law at all. Besides, artists aren't being hurt by downloads anyway only the greedy record companies who have been screwing us for years. The artists make all their money touring and from merch. Newsgroups are the best and fastest way to get what you want. The selection at those pay sites is very limited.

9. Newsgroups are illegal I think because
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 12:16 PM by tjdee
you aren't paying for the music--it's file sharing just like the old Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, etc. That's why Napster got popped, they were giving away the music for free and Metallica (and of course the companies) got all pissy about it.

I haven't created a formal position on what I think of that, LOL. I don't think Gwen Stefani is crying her eyes all the way to the Prada store because 100 kids got one of her songs in a newsgroup. No one came running after kids in the 80s making mix tapes for their friends, or people taping songs off the radio.

But if I *were* Gwen Stefani, who has to be a corporate slave some of the time, I'd be mildly concerned that eventually no one would buy my cds and I'd be dropped by my music company. Very mildly concerned. I'd want to get the money that was coming to me for the work I did. No one can work for free.

I'm just saying, I think that's why the OP asked about the subscription sites and not just 'where can I get all those songs'.

10. I suppose.
But I don't believe anyone here is in danger of prosecution for getting a few songs. Perhaps I should have suggested to OP to go buy the CDs since the "legal" sites have almost no selection. Oh well, just trying to help out.

4. If you quit Napster, you lose everything you ever got from them
Once you sign with them, it's for life apparently.

5. Yeah, I don't really get that.
Can you burn songs from them--wouldn't you then have it on cd?

(I don't know from this legal Napster, LOL.)

But I read that somewhere too, that when you stop your subscription you're SOL. After running through hundreds of dollars on subscription fees!

7. check eMusic.com and archive.org
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 11:34 AM by gmoney
you get 40 tracks a month for $9.99, but they are straight MP3 files, not the restricted things like Rhapsody. You can browse their site and see what all they have before signing up. Not a bad deal...

http://www.archive.org/audio/ has a TON of free music, live shows, public domain and stuff.

Also, try your local library to borrow CDs and rip them to iTunes... a great way to experiment without risking any money...
