1. Did you change them to DVDs?
Or were they really not worth transferring?

5. I alrady HAD the DVDs to most of them, but for the remainder ...
I had.

Get Smart (1995) and 704 Hauser won't likely be released onto DVD any time ever.

2. How long will it take for those tapes to decompose...
Long time I bet...., but I am sure that you have the exact answer.

8. I do have the exact answer. But
the problem isn't me, though. It's our society that promotes this sort of thing instead of togetherness in the first place.

3. How did you dispose of them?
Curious from a recycling vs. garbage standpoint...

6. Why?
What kind of tapes were they? Would anyone else have enjoyed them? If so, go fetch them out of the trash before they get mixed in with the garbage, and donate them to a thrift store or something. Unless they were filled with copyrighted material that you taped for your own use, of course. You don't want the MPAA beating down your door with a subpeona.

9. Quite!!!
Just old TV shows I'd taped 15 years ago.

The visual quality is piss poor and I had bought the DVDs too.

The MPAA has nothing to worry about, rest assured.

17. Well, enjoy the freed-up space!
I imagine 150 fewer VCR tapes in the home will leave a lot of room for something else!
:)

18. Technically, they are in the 'free' area. So people who want them
can take and erase them.

11. Sad, isn't it?
We collect these things and they just sit, unused, degrading...

Adn the more you use them the more they degrade... or get crinkled by the VCR...

...seriously.

I asked you how you disposed of them...and thought about how I should. Checked on my local recycling center, and they don't seem to address the issue. So, I kept looking...and found this:

GreenDisk.com

GreenDisk provides secured, audited disposal of intellectual property stored on electronic media and other technotrash. The resulting materials are then used to manufacture the GreenDisk branded line of office supplies. Through a set of strategic alliances, GreenDisk works with both for profit and non-profit companies to create a national network of service providers. Rather than build new manufacturing facilities and recycling centers, GreenDisk partners with these non-profit agencies. This creates jobs for workers with disabilities while creating an innovative set of recycling services along with a new line of recycled products.

Initially, the company focused on the need among software publishers for a secure system of disposal of their unsold packages of obsolete software. Their primary concern was for the destruction of the intellectual property. GreenDisk's concern was for accomplishing this important task in an environmentally responsible manner without compromising security. GreenDisk provides a solution to this problem by offering alternatives that create an audit trail to assure that all intellectual property is destroyed and the materials recycled. In response to demand GreenDisk began to offer its secure disposal services to a wider range of clients. The company now serves publishers, businesses, government agencies and individuals who have similar concerns about their data and their environment. The spectrum of materials recycled has also grown to include everything from a diskette to the whole PC. GreenDisk can now provide full recycling accountability for the entire range of technotrash.
