1. Dunno but they're legendarily uncomfortable
and who wants that?

2. Hope not.
Just bought one for my son's bedroom and one for my office.

But I have been known to be behind the times.

4. We still use the one I bought years ago
DO NOT skimp on the mattress. I went high-end with mine, and more than 10 years later, overnight guests are still treated to a good night's sleep on a comfortable surface.

5. I sleep on one, so more than likely they are.
It's about 8" thick and VERY comfy! As comfortable as my old bed was.

6. Definitely splurge for the best mattress you can afford.
You won't regret it if you do that.

10. I got a relatively inexpensive frame for my office, but got the top
of the line mattress. It is so darn comfortable, my kids fight over who gets to sleep there.

11. I'd sooner buy a decent sofa, and put whatever cost would go
towards the futon bit, back into the sofa - so to speak.

In other words, just buy a better sofa. There's fewer bars going right across where your lower back and thighs will be.

12. Futons are not passé in Japan
but then, no one uses them for couches there, either.

They just sleep on them.

13. Futons are great for
a small space or as a guest bed option. But, if you have the room, I'd vote for a sofa.

15. AHHH!!! A "futon" IS the mattress. The frame is just the frame.
The frame is not the futon!

Only the mattress part is the futon.

Just wanted to clear that up, everyone. Go about your business.

16. They're great in small studio flats
On the floor, they make the room seem larger. I'm comfortable living low. My current futon is 5 1/2 years old. It has a couple layers of foam between the cotton to somewhat retain shape. I flip and rotate it regularily (about three times a night -- ok joking). There is a slight depression in the middle. I should get a sleeping partner to fix that. Alas, the only woman in a long time to click with me is from our London office. And she's returning in a couple days.

17. Get a Mali Flex futon -- they are SO comfortable!
They also don't take up much space, because the back doesn't fold down -- the arms fold down to make a long, single bed. I LOVE mine and am thinking of getting another one. Target has them on their website. Here's a photo of mine...

They have all kinds of colors now. When I bought mine, they only came in three different color sets.
