10. All is going well
One month into the self improvement project and I'm really feeling good. But I still can't get to sleep before 4 or 5 AM. I haven't had any caffiene since 5:30 PM. And of course you know I don't have anything else in my system besides prescriptions. I don't know what the deal is.

27. I just had an appointment the other day
He said that the stuff I'm taking would usually have the opposite affect. But I guess it's not outside the realm of possibility. But I've been this way for the last 6 months. I can sleep, but usually not until just a little while before sunrise. And I've had a few times when I saw the light of dawn. I usually sleep until about noon. I'm glad that I have a second shift job and a boss who is sensitive to my needs. I wouldn't be able to handle first shift. I'd have to stay up all night and sleep after work.

28. I think some people are just naturally nightowls
and not necessarily insomniacs. Mr. Heidi's body clock is _very_ different from my own, for example. As long it doesn't make one's life unmanageable, I don't see a problem.

Congratulations on your success this past month, Droopy. I think you've been an inspiration to other DUers.

32. I wrote a poem for Saturday night/Sunday morning.
I didn’t care and threw the spool
Though, the thread was necessary
Needed to mend a sleeve
And the dog’s sweater got ripped

The dust devils under the bed
Are moonwalking
The air conditioner compressor
Is chirping.

There is thunder in the clouds
The cigarette lighter is empty
A small cup is balanced
Atop a jelly jar

Food is shipped in boxes
They have holes for spiders
Wet paper towels get weak
But my hands were already clean

awaken our spirit

41. Here's a poem I didn't write
but it's one of my absolute favorites. It's by a guy named Taylor Mali, a former junior high school teacher who now is a performing poet in NYC. Enjoy, Floog, et al.

"Playing Scrabble with Eddie, or
The Lesson of Language"

By Taylor Mali, www.taylormali.com

Despite his dyslexia or perhaps because of it,
Eddie can beat every eighth grader in Scrabble,
kick their ass, and he knows it. But he can't say it,
because to do so would mean automatic detention.
Scrabble was made for his mind.

Show him a rack of seven letters,
he'll tell you in an instant 10 different words
that use some combination of them,
his mind hard-wired for discombobulating vowels
and the hangling clangor of consonants:
a defecting filter straining out every single possibility.

But ask him to spell those 10 words,
and he'll give you DEAR instead or READ,
and sometimes even DARE.
Combine dyslexia with hyperactivity,
which we now call Attention Deficit Disorder,
ADD, or as Eddie says winsomely, DDA,
"Dad!"

15 milligrams of Ritalin taken twice a day,
dispensed by the nurse, an IQ of 140
and all the hormones of a 13 year old boy
dying for an education, and you have
a whacked-out, horny eighth grade genius
staring at seven letters on his rack
as if just getting the tiles in the right order
could unlock all the secrets of the language.

Eddie stares at my face, the board his tiles,
his tiles, the board, my face.
And I wonder what his rearranging mind
is doing with my nose, my mouth, my ears & my eyes.
How many one-eyed Picasso-faced English teachers
stare back at him from the educated audience
of his adolescence?

But here comes the word:
K-C-U-F
Kcuf? What's that?
And Eddie reddens. Eddie reddens
like he finally got the punch line to a dirty joke,
which in a way he has. Eddie reddens
like I've finally caught him swearing,
which in a way I haven't. Yet.

And the letters pivot around the K:
C-U-F.
Oh. Fuck. Well, that's different.
"Is that okay, Mr. Mali?"
Okay? What with the F on the Double Letter square
and the K on the Double Word, that's much more
than just okay, young man.
That's 32 points right there!
"Holy shit!" says Eddie.

And I give him a detention on the spot.
"Mr. Mali! What's up with that?
How come you let me play a word-"
Language, young man. Language.

There is nothing wrong with swearing if you need to, helps to deal with the stress.

90. We're never too old to learn something new.
I remind myself of that every day as I struggle with thinking in several languages in parallel. My husband and I speak English together, but the rest of the family here speaks Italian, Solothurn dialect of German, Swiss-German, and a little French and Spanish, depending on the family gathering. Sometimes I'm on "overload," but survival is a good motivater. ;)

My German and Czech would have had to much of a Texas accent anyway.

A lot of Germans and Czechs came to Texas, lots of them. My mother's side of the family is Czech. I would like to go to Europe but money has been a major problem.

67. My Saturday was lovely.
Visited with new friends. Giggled with their children.

Dusted off books from storage to put on the shelves, which was like visiting with old friends.

Hey, the cat on the patio photo..does he always look that amazing?

I went to the Tucson Poetry Festival last year with a friend of mine who was doing a reading there. One of the other guests that night was this Brazilian woman named Luciana Souza. She's a jazz musician and singer etc. She sung Pablo Neruda poems set to Brazilian music. Damn it was beautiful. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Here is her website. http://www.lucianasouza.com/index.html

No big news to report here. Heidi, what's the eyeworm for today? Droopy, I've been up till 3 or 4 for some weeks now - managing on 5 or 6 hours per day. Last Knight, we're both just waiting for classes to start, I gather. Mine start September 6. Cal Peg, glad you're feeling better! CG, I really love those threads with pictures of beautiful places you start sometimes. KW, always nice to see you - does your nickname mean you are a great cook? Hello also to you, BWA. Lastly, thanks for the cookies, gmoney!

Here's a small shot of the area near where I live.

On edit: and hi to all who checked in while I was compposing this!

121. Only ~ if you truly care to know ...
About a bonfire representing Hecate ~ bearer of Light that illuminates the Darkness. ... I wandered around here www.rosencomet.com for 3 days, until I was certain there was no one I knew from my hometown ... before I shed my clothes to walk around a huge bonfire. On my first time around ... I was asking myself 'why' because I wanted the shelter of my cloak before I was 1/2 way back to where I had carefully placed it on a log. When I'd made it around the first time, I decided that it wasn't so bad. At the end of my second turn, I was walking a bit more carefree. By the time I finished my third and final walk around that HUGE fire I had added the energy of the light to my heart. I walked over to my old green moleskin cape and picked up my newly purchased green lace cape ... as it settled around my naked shoulders the very rare Green Caped Joani was born.

Namaste

Oh, school is easy, I have certain gifts that make it easy for me to get A's etc. It's just actually having to go somewhere everyday that I don't like, haha.

I am taking: Health Care Policy, Tribal Government, Political Theory, and International Relations. All political science courses. I wasn't able to fit in any of my required writing classes, although I wish I could have. Should be an interesting semester, anyway. I really wanted to take International Relations. I'm glad it was open.

He's the Real Deal; so many others out there are pretenders.

You're not going to believe this, but when we were in our car accident a few weeks ago, I had to get checked out by the EMT's. One British guy was working on me and asked me what I did for a living and I mentioned my station and the overnight show (which I never fail to promote when I can:) Anyway, he asks me what I play, and I tell him anything from Hank Williams to Motorhead, and the guy looks at me and says "I was a roadie for Motorhead in 1982!!" He then proceeds to tell me about Lemmy and Phil and what great (but insane) guys theyy were, and I ended up giving him one of my cards!

Small freakin' world sometimes..

Sort of like not looking both ways before crossing a four-lane highway, and not exactly getting smushed by an 18-wheeler, but feeling it whistle by within inches of one's body. :scared: A sobering effect, you might say.

I had a pleasant weekend...did some fun things, like get a much-needed haircut, and today my husband and I went to a book-signing. A friend of ours writes books on our town's culture and history. Every time she publishes a new book, she kicks it off with a book signing at her home....they are fun!

Back to a more "normal" week tomorrow!
