Great ending for a great show. It lost its way sometimes but was still better than 99% of what gets aired.

Actually a more optimistic ending than I thought I'd see....

7. totally fitting though
The show is about death, and it doesn't shy away from it. As the characters are very real, it was perfect that they showed how they would die.

Claire was able to look past his misguided opinions but maybe he changed. I think she was happy with him and that is something that neither Gabe, Russel, Jimmy nor Billy could do.

Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 09:36 PM by SharonRB
Wasn't it 2025? So, she must be in her forties. He was a freeper, but he was basically a good guy. "Mixed" marriages do work somtimes -- e.g., Matalin and Carville.

28. Nah, I think that by the time he and Claire married there were no freepers
... what with Bush and Cheney spending the rest of their lives in jail and the entire Neo-Con agenda going down in flames.

Ted had seen the light by that time.

42. There was a hint that he was not totally freeperized-
Claire told him she had an abortion, and he didn't freak out- he implied that he had fathered a child himself- circumstances unclear.

I agree with you- after the Bush and Cheney neocon agenda was exposed, the hypocrisy of the far right became unbearable to him. He switched parties, and he and Claire became prominent NYC dems.

71. I think the reason it took so long for Ted & Claire to get back together..
...was because he was finally able to return to the United STates after fleeing to Canada because we invade Iran and they reinstated the draft. Remember one of the last things that Claire said to Ted was that if US invades Canada and the draft was reinstated he was to get to Canada and suprisingly Ted jokingly said "sure"

Well, probably was able to finally return to Canada (when the ones who ran to Canada were finally pardoned by President Chelsea Clinton in 2024) and he decided to look up Claire and reunite with her after a 20 year absense.

Anyhow, I think that's what happened

50. it really is something that you have to see , describing it
doesn't do it justice.

Imagine that you were able to see the course of life and death in your family--complete with the emotions you would feel, but having to move on to the next revelation. And you saw the complexity and depth of all those relationships. If you realized, with just clues that you saw, the trajectory of their lives and understood, could "see" what happened in those lives from the glimpses you saw. All within the course of a few minutes.

Something like that.

54. Ruth died in 2025, with George at her side.
She saw Nate and Nathaniel waiting for her. The 7 minute song was powerful for this sequence. I wish I knew who plays it.

Ruth opened her doggie daycare, Brenda's pre-mature baby celebrated her 1st birthday and Keith and David got married before Ruth died.

At her funeral, Ted (Not a freeper, just a wayward Republican, and Dem in waiting) showed up, and Clair hooked up with him again.

Keith died of gunshot wounds in 2029, working as a brinksman.

Ted and Clair got married, with David's adult boys sitting by his side. One had a gay lover, the other a white wife, and a grandson.

David died of a stroke after seeing a vision of Keith at a picnic, 15 years after Keith died.

Brenda died in a nursing home at 91, with Billy and his walker at her side.

Rico died on a cruiseship, of a heart attack, as Vanessa was lounging on the deck with him. This was somewhere around 2064.

And, Clair still 19 driving to NY through camera cuts, dies in her bed, surrounded by her life's work in photos, and a hospice nurse in 2085. She was 102 years old.

I rewound it 4 times. It was a beautiful ending to the deepest series that TV has ever seen.

101. Lyrics to the song by Sia:
Breathe me

Help, I have done it again
I have been here many times before
Hurt myself again today
And, the worst part is there's no-one else to blame

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I'm needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Ouch I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found,
Yeah I think that I might break
I've lost myself again and I feel unsafe

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I'm needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I'm needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

14. My wife and I watched the entire run of the show
We both loved the show, and I really dug the ending. The show was always, for me, about integrating death into the life process, from premise to execution. It is fitting, then, that it would end by integrating the deaths of the characters into the life of the show. Really tight, both conceptually, and in action.

Neither of us cried. I saw it as more joyous, not mournful. You learn to accept death with an element of joy. It was quite beautiful, but not sad.

56. It was joyous to see these people
whose lives were so filled with anguish, things constantly going wrong and obviously death to all find some happiness in the end. My tears were tears of happiness for these characters until they started dying in the last ten minutes and once the credits started and I knew we'd never get another episode of SFU again.

19. Well, they didn't specify what kind of doctor she was at or
what she was there for, but I jumped to the same conclusion you obviously jumped to. They didn't deal with that at all otherwise, so I think it's open to our imaginations. Someone did predict that a few weeks back, I believe.

Interesting to see everyone age in the flash forwards. I also cried when they showed Keith getting shot. How sad was that?

92. Well, it was just after Carnivale ended, and I wasn't that much into
Deadwood or the others.

I'm gradually weaning myself off cable entirely. If the digital channels continue to deteriorate, I'll dump that, too.

I figure that if I dump enough channels, I can afford to buy or rent DVDs of almost anything I want to see.

55. SPOILERS -- The Denouement, Claire's Wedding
Thanks to TiVo, I've picked up a few less obvious visual clues about what happens to the main characters during the last 10 minutes leading to the denouement, Claire's wedding. Here's what I caught...

- Durell, David & Keith's older son, follows in the Fisher family footsteps. He grows from boy to man for Ruth's funeral. Durell later marries and has a beautiful biracial son (seen during Claire's wedding).

- Keith started his own armored transport security company, Charles Security, and died on the job.

- Anthony, David & Kieth's younger son, is gay (a rice queen, in fact) and holds his hottie partner's hand during Claire's wedding.

- Brenda's daughters are healthy and she marries a tall dark and handsome guy sometime before David and Keith are married. At Claire's wedding, we see she has dark and handsome young son.

Watching this causes the most cathartic crying I've had is many, many years.

61. As soon as I started sobbing at the end....
my best friend knocked at the door. I made him wait until the end credits had finished and I had mopped my tears before I could open the door. Bad timing.

If you noticed when Maggie was on phone to Ruth you could see she was pregnant. Also, Brenda was pregnant at Keith and David's wedding and had her hand on a good looking man's leg.
That was an incredible ending.

62. I didn't cry at all.
I thought the ending was very uplifting, very satisfying. There was no fairy tale ending. This was a celebration of life. And part of life is death.

65. I cried from the opening scene and continued until now....
This show has exceeded every expectation I could possibly have had. This last season, imho, has been the best of any show I've ever seen in the history of my t.v. watching - it doesn't even feel like t.v. (just like the ads say, it's not t.v. it's HBO - they hit the nail on the head with this one). It was wonderful to see the Fishers heal...and they managed, as the writers managed, as they always have to make it real and not pollyanna. They healed exactly how you would expect them to - the writers continuing to be true to the characters.
I only hoped that this season is up for every Emmey possible. Michael C. Hall's (David) acting this season, imho, is the best I've EVER seen. I'm going to miss this show like none other.

I can't get that song out of my head. Such a perfect ending and I really didn't think the ending would have so much closure.

P.S. Poor Keith!

P.P.S. So one of David/Keith's sons turned out gay? Awww...

67. I bought the CD yesterday and it's awesome....
That closing song they played tonight is on it along with the one they played last week called "Cold Wind." It was playing at the end of last weeks show when Clair was in the bus looking out the window and Brenda was in labor. When I heard it I thought..man, what a great sounding song so I checked it out. Come to find out it was written just for SFU and it's incredible. In fact, the CD has several cuts that are just wonderful...

69. And hopefully the CD
doesn't get as chopped up as the songs on 6FU. They'll splice a 4-minute song down to 1:30 to fit inside of the credits and it drives me CRAZY.

But that aside, what a freaking awesome ending. Why do good shows have to end? Oh yeah so they don't get bad.

This last one. For the moms-you undesrstand. YES-Cindy Sheehan, and every body fucking else that ever loses a child while alive-as the mom said-it's the worst fucking nightmare ever-you have to be a mother or father to know-and the ending was the best ever-the real deal everybody dies-great mystery of life!!!

I cried the last five minutes straight it was so beautiful and real. Everyone dies-the key is to be alive first. I think I've got it.

CHEERS!

Edited because this is my 3000th post and I still can't spell-yet I know the meaning of life-so sue me!

70. OMG.
This whole show was terrific, but the ending-just blew me away. I worked tonight :grr:, so I had to watch it at midnight EDT. (I couldn't record it because I was recording "Embedded" and I knew it would be on again at 12am.) Just the best ending to a series that I have ever seen. I'm so going to miss this show and these people.

And They All Died Happily Ever After, Sort Of

By VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN

Some said the world would end in fire. Some said in ice.

But no one predicted that the finale to HBO's apocalyptic drama "Six Feet Under" would be served room temperature. Instead, insiders, who had seen the show in advance, promised last week that the 75-minute episode would blow our minds. But, really, we should have been skeptical: our minds, after all, were already blown.

74. had to fetch the box of tissues after the credits rolled
not a dry eye in the house, well, I don't think the cats cried, but my spouse and I both did.

Usually, we watch SFU with a younger couple that are our best friends in the neighborhood. They're out in wine country on a bike tour, and we decided, what the heck, we'll watch it tonight, and see it again when they come back, on tape.

We're so glad we were alone for the concluding episode - not only because of our emotional release during that final 10 minutes, but because, even though that other couple are friends, and have more advanced degrees than either of us, they don't understand foreshadowing or other elements of the writer's craft, and constantly ask "who's that?" when a new character appears, instead of waiting for the plot to develop. It was nice to have that sentimental moment to ourselves.

94. In Davids obit, he is referred to as partner
and since Keiths obit referred to David as his husband I can only assume David didn't marry him like he did Keith.

100. Another cool point
You noticed how Brenda became more a part of the Fisher family? She was at more family events.

I like that they added that. Brenda always seemed like such mess. I'm glad they had her re-marry and have another baby.
