Which movie should I watch tonight?

I bought some movies yesterday at Best Buy to add to my hubby's and my collection. We bought JFK (already watched it), Gangs of New York, Bugsy, and The Life of David Gale.

1. I hate to say it...

But they're all stinkers.

Rent "Downfall" instead.

I will watch them anyway since I did buy them, but I do hate to hear that they suck!

11. My tastes are more towards film, not movies

Those are movies.

To me films are cinema like Affliction, The Apostle, Whale Rider, Anchoress, The Godfather (part one only), The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, House of Sand and Fog, etc.

The House of Sand and Fog was so sad to me!

I didn't even intend on watching it, but I was lounging around and it came on and I got into it immediately.

20. I read the book before seeing the movie

Once I heard Ben Kingsley had signed on to play Colonel Behrani, I knew it was one I wanted for my collection.

I'm not a fan of Jennifer Connelly, but I liked the way she played her character in the movie.

Very tragic, but in the context of the cultural differences, predictable.

If not for Kevin Costner (and this is one of his only reasonable roles), it'da been perfect.

17. Everyone has different tastes. I have seen

movies that others said sucked and liked them and I have gotten movies based on rave reviews and hated them. Just watch them and who knows, you may like them all.

Let me know how you liked David Gale after you see it.

Gangs of New York was pretentious, too long and too dumb to be good IMHO.

I'm a big fan of Martin Scorsese, but I won't forgive him for dropping this stinker on us.

The highlight was Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis was over the top and Leo was miscast.

The only redeeming value was Peter Gabriel's score.

I go to Best Buy often and buy movies that I have no clue about. I watch them. Some suck and some don't. But I'm certainly not mad that you think my movies suck. I have bought some stinkers before for sure.

I only buy movies and films on my list of must haves.

So far I'm up to 350 DVDs, and some you would consider stinkers I'm sure. Some I consider stinkers, like Battlefield Earth, The Postman and Waterworld, but for some reason I'm fascinated at how bad they are.

19. Yeah those are pretty bad. My hubby really

loves mobster flicks so we have a lot of those (Casino, Scarface, all of The Godfathers, Goodfellas, Knock Around Guys, Donnie Brasco, A Bronx Tale). I tried to find Carlito's Way yesterday but they didn't have it. I am more interested in classics. I bought One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, Easy Rider, Vertigo (I love Hitchcock), Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. Do you have any suggestions since you seem to be a movie buff? I thought Bugsy was kind of a classic, but maybe I was wrong. I am also a huge fan of Jack Nicholson.

23. Anything with Warren Beatty in it is a stinker IMHO

Except for Lipstick and Heaven Can Wait (which isn't as good as the original).

Ishtar, who can ever forgive him for that? At least Hoffman rebounded.


I've got most of the same mobster movies, and the classics.


Wag The Dog is a must have, so is Finding Neverland and Marathon Man.

Hell, anything with Johnny Depp is a must have. Especially the black and white shot Dead Man.


And if you really have ecliptic tastes, City of Lost Children is a must have.

If you're into war films, Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War is a must have. It's out of South Korea. Most of my favorite films are foreign.

24. Finding Neverland was wonderful.

I absolutely loved it. I am a huge Depp fan. I have not seen any of the others except for Wag the Dog. I'll definitely look into the others.

And Kate Winslet best supporting actress.

As good a movie as Million Dollar Baby was, Finding Neverland was much better.

I liked her in Finding Neverland (and I said she should have won best supporting actress, I thought Swank deserved her best actress award), but the only other film I liked her in was Sense and Sensibility(although I didn't care for the movie).

Beatty overplayed the part.

Dunaway was excellent, as usual. But her best part was in Chinatown.

It was really violent. Its a good looking movie too, even if the dialogue and characters sucked.

35. I have seen Kinsey.

It was odd and interesting. What did you think of Birth, Closer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 21 Grams? And are you a fan of Bill Murray? I just love him.

39. The run-down

Birth: Haven't seen, have no desire to see. Not much of a Kidman fan. On edit: I did like her in Cold Mountain though.

Closer: Own it. One of those rare films where all the characters are not only despicable, but fascinating. It was over too soon.

Eternal Sunshine...: 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. Good concept, poor execution. Carrey should stick to slapstick, physical comedy.

21 Grams: Own it. Sean Penn at his best. At least until I watched The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Penn continues to outdo himself.


Forgot to address Bill Murray.

Murray should have won best actor in 2003 for Lost in Translation. It's one of the best films in recent years. I can't wait for Broken Flowers to be released.

41. I almost bought The Assassination of Richard Nixon, but

decided to wait until later. I did buy And Justice For All which stars Al Pacino and Christine Lhatti among others. I believe Pacino won an Oscar for the role.

As far as Murray goes, I loved him in The Life Aquatic. I, too, can't wait to see Broken Flowers.

For me I loved Birth, loved Closer, loved 21 grams, hated Spotless Mind.

44. Sounds like we have pretty much the same tastes

The Life Aquatic was just too over the top for me to enjoy. I loved Anjelica Huston, hated Owen Wilson and enjoyed Willem Dafoe (have you seen The Boondock Saints? He plays a flaming gay detective. I loved it for the violence for violence's sake.) And in the midst of all this, Murray's character got lost.

And Justice For All is a classic. Another good one is Robert De Niro in Guilty by Suspicion.


What is it about Birth you liked? Maybe you can convince me to watch it.


P.S. If you like Sean Penn, you'll enjoy The Assassination of Richard Nixon. He takes up 90% of the film time but you don't get enough of him (at least I didn't). His range of emotions and watching as his character slips into insanity could be studied in college psychology courses.

46. I liked it b/c you have to figure out

what you believe is going on. It isn't cut and dry. There are several ways you can interpret it. It kind of leaves you hanging in the end, but that is what I like. I don't like a movie that necessarily has a happy ever after ending or one that spells everything out for you. This movie doesn't do that, you have to actually think. You may end up hating it, but I think it is worth watching anyway.

and I did not like it. I went to it because it was supposed to critique the death penalty, but it wound up undermining this position, if you ask me.
