"Well, we've found there is a day missing in space in the elapsed time." Did you know that the space program is busy providing that what has been called a 'myth' in the Bible is true?! Mr. Harold Hill, president of Curits Engine company, Baltimore, Michigan, and a consultant in the space program related the following development:

"I think that one of the most amazing things that God has for us today happened recently to our astronauts and space scientists at Green Belt, Michigan. They were checking the position of the sun, moon and planets out there, where they would be 100 and 1000 years from now. We have to know this so that we don't send a satellite up and have it bump into some-thing later on in its orbits. We have to lay out the orbit in terms of the life of the satellite, and where the planets will be, so the whole thing will not bog down."

They ran the computer measurement back and forth over the centuries, and it came to a halt. The computer stopped and put up a red signal, which meant that there was something wrong, either in the info fed in it, or with the results as compared with the standards. They called the service department to check it out, and they said, "It's perfect."

The IBM head of operations asked, "What's wrong?" "Well, we've found there is a day, missing in space in the elapsed time." They scratched their heads and pulled their hair. There was no answer... One Christian fellow in the team said, "You know, one time I was in Sunday School and they talked about the sun standing still." They did not believe him but they didn't have any other answer, so they said, "Show us."

He got a Bible, and went back to Joshua where they found a pretty ridiculous statement, for anybody who had common sense. They found the Lord saying to Joshua, "Fear them not. I have delivered them into Thy hand. There shall not a man of them stand before Thee." Joshua was concerned because he was surrounded by the enemy, and if darkness fell they could overpower him. So Joshua asked the Lord to make the sun stand still. That's right. "The sun stood and the moon stayed.....and hasted not to go down, about a whole day." Well, they checked the computers, going back into the time it was written, and found it was close, but not close enough. The elapsed time that was missing back in Joshua's time was 23 hours and 20 minutes - not a whole day.

I remember in high school I had a physics teacher - incredible teacher, but a little too Christian - who told us a number of times that scientists had "done the math" and, as my teacher said, "they have four hours of missing orbit time right around the time of Jericho".

These stories get made up and keep getting repeated.

There is no fucking missing day. There is, in fact, no way to TELL if there is a missing day, because trying to pinpoint the event at Jericho has the finest resolution of maybe 100 years.

The only this bullshit Christian lie fucking shit could be true is if we also knew the EXACT DAY that the battle of Jericho took place.

Otherwise, there's no way to do it.

4. Calm down, I was joking. I remember this story from

actually everything will fly off since the sun remains stationary.

I had a science teacher in the 9th grade at a fundie school and was telling some kids about how the full moon affects the growth of crops and he overhead me and nearly popped a vein, and said whoever told me that was a crazy old backwoods farmer and God this and that. It really bothered me, because the moon does affect us. Yeah, I get mad too.

I really want a science teacher who goes to God as the explanation for everything, and who won't admit to the GIANT FUCKING ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM.

My Christianity (and I am a Christian) demands that I *use my brain*, and that, if there is a GIANT FUCKING ELEPHANT in the room, I better make allowance for that reality instead of ignoring it or explaining it away as something else.

GIANT FUCKING ELEPHANT being things like all the data pointing to evolution, to a very old universe, genetic theory and our close relation to many other mammals, to a very fucking huge universe, that certain of the stories in the Bible aren't literally true because they just can't be (e.g., the aforementioned stopping of the earth's rotation at Jericho), etc.

I was looking at that crazy new daylight saving to start in 2007 and this story popped in my head. Fundies don't get it that sometimes God might like to play a joke or two on us humans. Look at Aardvarks for crying out loud...and that sun standing still!

3. Somebody doesn't know orbital mechanics.

As it says in snopes, this is nonsense. Such a computer program would IGNORE any 'missing day' UNLESS it was programed in already.

Oh, and Mr. Harold Hill was a contractor providing diesel generators to Nasa... not a engineer, nor a Nasa employee... I doubt they would allow him in the building where the computers were working.
