from rare time to time - to go ahead and splurge on the hotel room... if I know the company is going to be good, and I want to enjoy it without worrying. Of course if the employer has chosen a way expensive place - that shoots the idea way out of the water.

Splurge.

If the company and enjoyable times is worth it - then splurge (not split if you can find someone to cut costs and bunk with.) Point - have the reserve to do the splurge -then after you have a feel for who is there and whether or not it would be worth the time to "commune" with the folks - just go for the splurge and view it as a mini vacation (in terms of spending the $ to enjoy the folks.)

I once did a grad school recruiting gig (at a "college fair") in Santa Barbara - blew the whole amount I would earn for the day - on staying at a resort hotel (which without the $ for the fair I would NEVER have) - viewed it as a way to have a splurgy treat that I couldn't do any other way. Had a fabulous dinner (gourmet would be an understatement) - had a room looking over the beach - and just basked in the obsenity of the luxury (given my regular living circumstances as a very broke grad student.) - And to this day - relish the memory.

THis may be the 'gang' that makes it work hanging out (ala - the commraderia will be rejuvinating) or not. In the former case - go for it - spend and luxuriate. In the latter ("or not") - enjoy the conference - but travel home early (and put aside what you might have spent for some other opportunity to splurge.)

I'm gonna be traveling for work tomorrow through Thursday and I'm not gonna have ANY access during the day. *pout*

The good news is...it looks like I'm gonna make it to DC. My mom is getting the plane ticket cheap with the last of her frequent flyer miles. I think I found someone to share a hotel room with. I just gotta get the leave approved and I'm good to go. :)
