Let us now praise the Lovin' Spoonful.

Just got the CD issue of "Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful". Early 1966. Same year as "Revolver" and "Pet Sounds", and worthy of being included in their company.

John Sebastian was a brilliant songwriter, Steve Boone and Joe Butler consummate musicians, and Zal Yanovsky combined inventive guitar playing with a Harpo Marx attitude.

Zally got a raw deal when he and Butler got busted for pot. Sadly, the "alternative press" of the time mercilessly turned on them, and the Spoonful.

Gotta be some other Spoonful fans out there.

Zally was a Canadian. When he and Butler got busted, they faced prison. It was 1966, after all. Management team was no help at all. They told Zal they'd just deport him if he gave the name of his supplier. He caved and did so. So off he went to Canada. Become a celebrity restauranteur up there, and never looked back at his stardom days.

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
"Take me to New York right away."
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps;
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps.
McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aimin' at.

10. The Spoonful were a great band

They had a run for a couple years that rivaled CCR for inventive pop music. "Darling Be Home Soon" was the first song I can ever remember hearing as a kid, and I still love playing it on guitar to this day..
