that in the 21st century a large portion of the human population has receded to this. I thought we were supposed to advance with evolution--not regress.

It is just more public than before and maybe more radical. But there have always been fundies. It sucks b/c if you are Muslim or Christian or whatever, you feel as if you have to defend your beliefs b/c of the loons out there making the rest of us look bad.

They just like to think they are, while they act and speak the very same way. A fundie wingnut is a fundie wingnut no matter what their attire, skin tone or faith.
