Any tech people hate technology when they get home???

I have a very technical job...lots of software involved...

However when I go home...I like nothing more than to disconnect myself from it....aside from my DU addiction.

I cook, bake, garden, and read...and I love to play with my kiddies..

I know many techies can't get enough of it...but I need the break...otherwise I would go insane.

I hate the phone, I hate the fax, I hate when someone calls me at home to ask me technical questions and I hate doing anything related to technology when I get home.....if I could I would try to live as close to an Amish like existence when I come home...

Dial telephones, manual typewriters with round nickel-trimmed keys, you get the picture.

3. I have a rotary phone at home

and I refuse to get a cell phone.

I'm a big computer geek who has a big love/hate relationship of the digital revolution. I love vinyl records, I have a vintage quadraphonic surround system, I love the sound of vacuum tubes, I refer the old answering machines to voice mail, I like old style doorbells that are actual bells. I like writing on a notebook pad, shopping in real stores. You get the picture.

2. Me, too, me, too!

I didn't get a home PC for YEARS! Then I got one for my kids to use for school stuff. I just use it occasionally for email and checking DU or the news.

I'm helpless with the DVD/VCR controls, my kids had to show me how send a text message and I'm digging up all my lawn so I don't have to get a mower.

4. I love my technology except when it doesn't work

Which is quite a lot of the time. :grr:

5. My EE husband -- works on his sailboat

and rarely uses the computer at home.

Oh -- at home I'm the one who programs the VCR etc -- and loads in new software -- buys new software -- and pushes software to the limits. Mostly graphics software.

I installed the first turbo tax software 15 years ago -- and used it -- while he used the old paper and pencil method. Turbo tax was correct -- so for the next few years he'd feed me the numbers and I'd enter them into Turbo tax.

His job heavily involves computers -- all sorts.

He does fix my computer when it has problems -- he put two keys back on my laptop.

However -- he does love the GPS receivers (Garmin) for laying in routes when sailing. Wind power first and then Satellites to help steer a course.

6. I mostly work at home, you insensitive clod! I can't escape.

I am one of those bitter burned out tech people who hates technology more than you will ever know. Wally from Dilbert is my hero because he just doesn't give a damn about high technology any more. He could use a million dollar cell phone prototype to stir his coffee and he wouldn't feel bad about it.

I have a rotary dial phone on my desk. The bottom of the phone says:

"Bell System Property. Not For Sale."

That makes me laugh.

I love my milling machine. It's completely manual, no CNC or any of that crapola.

I practice FCE machining - Fuckin' Close Enough.

I used to love computer stuff... til I did it for a living.

It had been play but became work. And it wasn't fun anymore.

12. I'm like you. Until I got a cable hookup at home, I didn't even...

get on the Internet at home. (Too slow since I was used to a T1 line at work.)

I'm a programmer, and I enjoy programming as a job; I don't enjoy it enough to do it without being paid.

My mother's really technically challenged, so I never buy her gifts that will require me to hold her hand when something doesn't work. (Whoever bought her the gift is the person who must help her any time she has a problem with it.) One time, I bought her a digital camera and decided not to give it to her because I knew how much work it would be. (I buy her lots of gifts -- just not technical gifts.)

16. I have to agree about people buying stuff for the technically challenged

it only frustrates them....or collects dust.

My mom however buys her own stuff and reads the entire manual....ah I love her...so smart...

17. My mother tries, but she's intimidated -- she thinks that everything...

is beyond her ability to understand, even though she's very intelligent. She won't drive because she doesn't trust herself. I'd rather have her driving around than 99% of the people who are currently driving around! :)

19. Well, that's what gets me -- my mother raised us on her own also.

Guess she just fell for what she was told about women and what they were capable of doing. (Even though she did more for us than I could ever do if I had children or could ever repay her for doing.) She really is superwoman to me (except for this technical stuff)!

But when I have all my friends and family bugging me for computer help, I curse technology and the horse it rode in on.

15. I spend an average 12 hours a day on computers

And 10 of those consist of me shouting at the computer. Increasingly I dislike them. But they are wonderful tools...when they do what they're supposed to do.

I can use some of the most sophisticated software in the world, but I cannot operate a fax machine to save my life. I'm helpless.

but the last thing I want to do is build a machine or research a problem. I'd rather bake cookies, watch television, and play with the dog than do computer stuff.
