I'm sick..Kitty's incision became infected and has now opened up
We've been working with the vet daily since Friday. The infection began Friday, 1 week post surgery even though she'd been on antibiotics during that time. He said the blood flow was cut off to the surrounding tissue and was dying and he removed some of it and said the rest would come off in the next few days. Well today was the day. We're scheduled to go in on Friday to be restitched. I just got off the phone with him..he wants it to heal as much as possible on it's own now.

Ugh..Has anyone been through anything like this before. Years ago I had a dog with a post surgery infection that broke open in some areas and lanced in others..but nothing like this. I can see her underlying stitches. This is on her hip..she had hip displasia surgery.

1. Poor kitty :(
I have no experience at all with this type of thing. That poor little girl.

Sending my best wishes for a speedy kitty recovery.

Have you been using any antibiotic ointment or anything on the area, or is that supposed to be a no-no?

I don't know what else you can do for her except show her plenty of love and attention (maybe give her some kitty treats if she'll eat them).

On edit: If you have a store near you that sells homeopathic and herbal remedies, see if you can track down some powdered myrrh (just sprinkle liberally on the wound). This stuff works miracls on lacerations and such. We used it on pets frequently when I was a kid and it always sped up the healing by a huge degree. It caused the wound to scab over and heal MUCH more quickly.

You can order it here: http://www.herbalremedies.com/myrrhgumbulk.html

12. She's on a stronger oral antibiotic now and I'm not supposed to
use saline to irrigate it anymore. I had to irrigate since Sunday morning along with a bit of peroxide afterwards. The vet said now that I can only use a little peroxide to remove anything that may get in it. The opening is about 2" x 4"..so big on a 12lb kitty.

Thanks for the info. I may get that to keep around for both the dog and cat.

7. Believe it or not, some hospitals use laboratory-grown maggots
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 03:36 PM by marzipanni
to clean out necrotic tissue. A kitty wouldn't stand for that. When I had an infection starting in a small incision my doc told me to use nothing but hydrogen peroxide, but you can't explain to an animal why it stings a bit. As your vet said, just give it some time to heal. Does Kitty have to wear an eliabethan collar? Poor puddy-tat.
How about those maggots?:http://www.humboldt.edu/~jcb10/maggot.html

14. No, no collar..but we have one fashioned and ready to go if
she decides to go after the spot. I think she's surprised she can stand up and walk..which just began last Thursday. She stopped once the infection began but late this afternoon she's been up and walking a tiny bit.

The thought of maggots.. :puke:

10. not with a pet
my right ankle -- but that's preferable to me than to go through this with one of my kitties

17. Thanks bertha. I would rather be going through it myself
than seeing her go through this. I hate seeing animals hurt or in pain..and it's not like they can let us know.

Did your ankle heal ok?

18. She hates the vet now...yowls and growls when she sees him.
I'm afraid she may grow to hate me too since I've done most of the cleaning and painful stuff..although she's actually laying on the bed next to my computer chair purring her little heart out.

21. Oh they are such sweet little things. My cat, when he was terribly
sick, got to the point of running from me if he heard me getting the car keys. It's terrible when they run from you. Let's hope this little one heals just fine now.
