Who else here sucks at grammar and punctuation?

6. I studied Russian in college as well

but I had to suppress my knowledge in order to learn Polish. As the two are closely related languages, I would be searching my brain for the Polish word, but the Russian word would always arise.

The Russian is the same as Polish here, but I'll spell it in Polish:

Na zdrowia!

Do skorowo!

11. I had a real hard time with Russian

Part of it was that I had bits and pieces of other languages so when my vocabulary failed I'd fill in with French or German or Japanese.

My prof once took me aside and said "This is a Russian class and you are not the UN!"

12. Ah... another polyglot

The languages I have studied are: German (Hochdeutsch, Sachsisch and Berlinisch dialects), Polish, Russian, Spanish and American Sign Language.

I gained my certificate in Polish from the Martin Luther University in Halle, Germany. The professor and the one other student in the class were tried and true East Germans, with Russian as their second language. So... when I didn't know a certain phrase and Russian came out by mistake, they would always "give me the look". This was one interesting experience: studying Polish in a German environment; that is, all the explanations I needed were in German. This gave me many frustration dreams. LOL!

13. I do find language fascinating

but I've only really studied Russian and French. The rest I all taught myself. And it is not my forte.

German, Japanese, Arabic, some very basic Hindi. I do pretty good with Dutch and Italian and Latin. But my pronunciation sucks and my vocab is limited. Somehow I find other languages much easier to read than speak or hear. I'm trying to teach myself to read Sanskrit but it's been very tough going.

14. I had to acquire Polish for my history degree...

for primary sources and such. So I taught myself enough to test into intermediate Polish before formal lessons began.

With my ability in German I discovered that I could understand about one-third of written Danish. I have never been exposed to Dutch, so I wonder how much I could understand. On the down side I am only able to understand Germans in the east and north. The further south I go in the German-speaking world, the less I can understand. I have no idea of what the Swiss are saying when they speak German; many Germans have told me that they cannot understand them either, so I should not worry or doubt my skill (which I have done). In 2004 I was in Freiburg im Breisgau and could not understand anyone. As one would say in Yiddish (but spelled with Polish phonetics): choj weh!
