Cat question....
I have a 15 year old calico cat.

I recently moved to a new apartment and decided it was a good time to get her a new litter pan and try new litter. Needless to say she has not taken to it very well at all (apartment, litter pan and litter).

I am trying my cat on the scooping litter rather than the old kind of litter.

I thought I had read somewhere that it was a good idea to put a little of the old litter in with the new litter. I didn't do that at first but did it last night.

I still don't think she is using the box.

Any suggestions?

Thank you cat gurus!

1. Might be the type of litter. I have a calico too.
They are sweeties.

I use Swheat Scoop - it's all natural, non-toxic, doesn't stink like clay and you can flush it down the toilet. I buy it at Target.

My girl likes Swheat Scoop when she hated some others.

2. Go back to your original litter for now.
There are too many changes going on here for the cat, IMHO. A move can be really stressful, particularly on older cats. Try to transition her to the new litter.

If she's still not using the box, take her to the vet, because at her age, she may be having some kidney issues. Good luck. :hi:

3. If she will use the old litter still, use mostly old litter, and every
week put a higher concentration of the newer litter in there. Gotta do it slowly though. The "can't teach an old dog new tricks" applies to cats too :-)

5. You can't change litter that quickly!
You have to do it gradually, like a change in food. I usually add 5%-10% of the new litter during each litter box change. This will take a while, but it's worth it. For now, I'd go back to using 100% of your old brand of litter.

6. New territory is traumatising to cats.
It's really better not to make any more changes to their routine and their belongings than you have to right after a move.

Especially with older cats, they can be pretty used to having things 'just so.'

That said, giver her time and as much of her old routine as you can and she'll sort it out.
