South Salt Lake city drafts home-brew ban - just in case

SOUTH SALT LAKE - City officials here are drafting an alcohol ordinance that, among other things, bans home-brewing.

Why bother. Utah already forbids homemade beer and wine - sort of - even though the prohibition is widely ignored.

"Under state law, nothing precludes the sale of home-brewing and wine-making equipment," said Earl Dorius, regulatory director of Utah's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (DABC). "But once the equipment is put to use, there's a technical violation of the law. We don't have a good answer for you if you want to do home production."

"We haven't had any problems with home-brewing in our city, but under state law it is illegal and we just wanted to make that clear," said South Salt Lake City Attorney David Carlson.

"I don't care what people do in their own homes as long as it doesn't spill out into the public," Mayor Wes Losser said. "But if there were problems related to home-brewing, such as people going blind or a small riot breaking out, we have to think in extremes to cover all the bases."

What a joke. Apparently it'll be illegal to brew a sixpack of beer, but not to marry a sixpack of wives...

4. Yeah, people go blind from homebrewing EVERY DAY......

...in some parts of the country. It's an epidemic. I say good for them. The State of Utah is to be commended for making Texas alcohol laws look good by comparison.

7. Maybe home distilling, but not home brewing.

Drinking a bad batch of grain alcohol can cause blindness. Drinking a bad batch of home brewed beer just tastes nasty.

But on a danger scale of 1-10, I'd give homebrewing about a 2. You might cut yourself on a broken bottle...you might even experience a ruptured fermentation vessel or line, but you're not likely to put an eye out.

I don't think anyone has ever gone blind from drinking home brew, unless the stuff is chemically spiked.

Of course, this may just be an excuse to maintain the SWAT teams they use against raves in Utah.

Salt Lake makes me crazy every time I visit as "rules" change constantly..

at present couldn't get a glass of wine with lunch as it was 11:58 and it's illegal until noon.

If you ask for a second drink you will be denied if there is a drop left in your glass....can't give another until you drain the first one doncha know.
