GAINESVILLE — Aris, the runaway police dog, was found Wednesday near a wildlife management area, police said.
The 65-pound German shepherd ran away from his handler during training on Sunday.
Two men found the dog during a visit to the Allen Creek Wildlife Management Area. Aris was at a nearby diesel repair shop, Gainesville police said.
Witnesses said the reunion of the police dog and his handler, Officer Jim VonEssen, was "heartwarming." VonEssen had not left the search area, day or night, except for brief rest periods.
A veterinary exam showed the dog "appeared to be in good health but a few pounds lighter," said Chief Frank Hooper.
Aris will not resume police duty until he can be evaluated and receive remedial training, Hooper added.
