Post a DU pet peeve
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 07:21 PM by jpgray
When people post something sarcastic/ironic/sardonic/platonic/ionic/polytonic, and then do this

(insert defusing smiley).

By the time I see the bigass message window, I -know- what's up. And yet I have to scroll anyway.

1. I hate unnecessarily rude and insulting replies (not joking ones) when
you could just agree to disagree.

Most of us are all on the same side so I hate it when we treat each other like "the enemy".

It just makes me :(

Well yeah, that wasn't too smart. I've stayed away from those threads cause I know very little about Ohio. But knowing what I know, hi-jinks in Ohio are not to be lightly dismissed.

Relatively clean data, eh? So you're an expert on that? And I guess you think Ohio is clean... no sign of recent hi-jinks?

120. nah just in Cuyahoga County....
I know that system well since I served on the Board of elections as well as being the treasurer for the county party for over 8 years...

I know how the data is presented and I know what happened.....

As for other counties....

Well, I can't speak for them....

I wanted people to stop loking at Cuyahoga and look at the other couties cause CC's problems were an old reporting system that presented the data so it appeared as if there were more votes than actually were cast in several municipalities... But those total that were reported on the report in question were not the official tally's.....

23. I hate black and white attitudes
I hate hero-worship on our side. It's unrealistic. It makes it tough for the rest of us to get on board. In fact, it puts me off. That's where Howard Dean and I parted company. Couldn't stand his adoring fan club. Of course if Al Gore decided to run again I may have re-think that sentiment.

Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 07:46 PM by jpgray
Back when Ohio was being contested in Congress, Hillary went from zero to hero then back again all in the space of about two and a half hours. It was mind-boggling. My opinion of her stayed virtually the same, but I got whiplash reading GD that day. Sometimes it seems no middle ground exists.

I'm not interested in anything enough to get that excited.

It's unrealistic to expect a person do act and say everything the way we want them to 100% of the time. In fact, this last sentence probably needs rewording but I'm not interesting enough to go back and do it.

34. Baiting and unnecessary arguments...
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 08:15 PM by bliss_eternal
I don't get why some on these boards can't accept that some don't share their opinion of some issue, and just let it be. It just seems insane that they insist we all be in lock step on every single issue.

Disagree, and allow me (or whoever else) to do what we feel in our heart is what we feel we need to do about something. This insistence that we all ignore the same issues, and act on the same issues, it just smacks of everything I hate about the right wing, and it bothers me a great deal to see that sort of bullying insistence on DU.

Then, after everyone has disagreed, called each other names, etc. The thread is locked by mods. Then someone ALWAYS starts a new thread on the SAME thing, just phrased differently or asking a related question. This thread tries to bait people somehow, and allows the original dissenters to come along and pummel the others a bit more (yes, I fell for this myself once or twice).

For the record--my peeve is DU members insisting we all agree and arguing everyone down that doesn't agree. Then the obligatory 'bait' thread...

I fell for bait once after the Roberts nomination was announced. Someone started a side thread asking 'what those of us that planned to fight it, planned to do--specifically.' I argued on and on w/this person--only to watch as they went back over their responses, erasing them to make it look like I was responding to nothing.

:wtf:

I was VERY sorry I fell for that bait.

On a brighter note, the ignore feature on DU rocks!!! ;)

76. You're kidding, right?
NO ONE on DU bashes vegetarians. They make up a substantial percentage of DUers, and the rest of us RESPECT and APPRECIATE their choices.

What some of us don't like is the SMUGNESS and SANCTIMONIUSNESS of SOME vegetarians and THAT is what is bashed. That is COMPLETELY different than bashing vegetarians or vegans. Bashing an attitude and bashing a choice are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

So your pet peeve doesn't exist, actually.

144. "Joking"
"There may be some JOKING about vegetarians, but that isn't bashing, unless one lacks a sense of humor."

Oh, okay, so can I start joking about homosexuals and minorities, and when people say it's out of line I can say "hey, it isn't bashing, you must have no sense of humor!"

Please. If there was a cause YOU felt *very* strongly about and took very seriously and people on a progressive message board told you to "lighten up" when they completely bashed you every week, you'd probably be a little pissed off too. :eyes:

What you and others fail to understand is that vegetarianism is something many of us take very seriously and it affects our lives very much. The point is we as a group have made REPEATED pleas for acceptance and respect, and we don't think these so-called "jokes" are funny, and that's reason enough for it to stop. If you're not mature enough to see that, then well...

Excuse it however you want, but it is attitudes like this that shouldn't be present on DU - unfortunately, they are.

Bush "The Senior" visited our HS during his re-election. The girl announcing his arrival said over the loud speaker,"Come on everybody. Let's cheer on the President. We Want Bush! We Want Bush!"

The laughter was deafening.

I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, but I don't know what to make of it. I sure wish somebody would tell what the secret is to posting and getting some sort of reaction. Maybe it's like everything else in life. There are those people who are "in" and those who are invisible. Please don't misunderstand that by no means are folks required to reply to anything I post, but it hardly ever happens. Who knows, maybe nobody will reply to this post too. Maybe I'm imagining it. Maybe I'm the electronic version of the guy who stands in the corner with a drink in his hand that nobody talks to.

I do all the time. I don't think there's a secret, it's just the subject matter you're posting about. If I post something that drops away in a flash, I just let it die the death it deserves. I've also been known to self delete a post that I think may be a stinker and needs to go away or I never should have posted in the first place.

62. People being boorish/stalking other DUers/just plain being mean
We are a very diverse group here so of course we are not all going to agree on everything. There are going to be times when we get into heated debates over delicate subjects. But there is no need for personal attacks.

There will be plenty of times that people post threads on topics in which you (the generic "you") have no interest. If so, just pass them over rather than posting a snarky reply about how little the subject interests you.

And there will no doubt be instances where some mebers develop animosities, but purposely "stalking" another member around the forum and snarking them at every opportunity is not only childish but downright freeperish behvior.

We are DUers--we can discuss all sorts of matters with tact and maturity, yet still have fun doing it. :silly:

Sorry if that bothers you, but right now, I have to scrape together $6,500+ for dental work and another grand to do some upkeep on my 14 year old Civic. all on $908 a month.

And I certainly can understand it. I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad; I saw a thread asking about pet peeves and that's mine because there are many, many who don't donate, who can just as there are in my biz who take advantage of the service daily. When you work in the non-profit world you become all too aware of that.

I have donated for others who can't and will continue to do so. I also donated before I even was a member.

But, I don't find the stars elitist; I'm sorry there are those who do.

I have no problem discussing my poverty, I had a lot of money at one time and gave it all away to people and causes who needed it more, as well as spending it on myself. And i don't regret it.

But you cannot possibly know the story behind every no star member... Some people like to keep their giving a secret and others have heartbreaking stories that are, quite frankly, none of your business.

i didn't read her posts as passing judgment. she just came on a pet peeve thread and talked about hers: people who have means, use a service, and don't contribute.

No mention of has the means there. And how is someone to know exactly what someone elses means are unless they post it in their profile? I did read it as passing judgment. It rankles her to see people with many posts who apparently don't pay.

I agree-If I am guessing right-you may be talking about public broadcasting of some sort...and that is non-profit. This is very pointedly a for-profit site. And there is a glitch in my membership of which you are aware...So even if I had the means, I probably would not be donating at this time.

116. I don't think I'm passing judgment; I'm contributing my peeve
Which this thread asked for. Of course, I can't know the situation behind every no star member and I'm not going to pry into anyone's business, nor do I think their stories are my business. But, working in the non-profit world of fundraising for 15 years now, it's been my experience that the percentage of users who don't donate but have the means, is larger than the percentage who genuinely can't afford it. All the more reason for the 'haves' to donate more generously.

I guess the thread should be called What's Your DU Pet Peeve That You Don't Think Will Upset Or Offend Anyone, However Unintentionally.

but only because the highly political nature of the content exempts it from non-profit status, if I've read correctly. I don't think that anyone is getting rich off DU and I feel that it's a great public service.

And, I'm sorry if I offended you, Miss Kitty, or came off as snarky. I can't know anyone's story nor can they know mine. Your issues are your issues and, for the record, this is the first time anybody has responded like this to a post concerning a pet peeve so I didn't know.

behind not getting the star she wouldn't understand. I think that in GENERAL she meant that those who use the forum and CAN contribute, SHOULD contribute. I feel the same way about friends who can well afford things but are cheap but do things like only get baseball tickets when they are free, wear fifteen-year old team shirts, bring their own peanuts to a ball game, and then claim to "support the team." Well, no, you don't support the team. You might cheer for them, but you clearly don't support them - then you wonder why the Yankees make all the money and get all the players.

It is a CHOICE for donors to REMOVE the star, because it carries a certain Star-Bellied Sneech aroma to it. An air of exclusivity some us of feel is contrary to democratic values.

My biggest DU peeve is star-elitism, and I say this as someone who has actually HAD the star for the majority of its existence. Dare I say, I was on DU before the freaking thing ever existed.

As for people who do not have a star because they CANNOT donate, cut them slack too - their finances are their business, no matter how much or how little they have.

I'm all for arguement within a thread, but when that thread is over, it's over people! there are hundreds of threads at any given time, don't carry a grudge around. you may passionately disagree with someone on one thread and find yourself agreeing with them on another, if you're open minded about it.

also, people who take it way to seriously, for the most part, these are people you have never met, and will never meet, who know nothing about you, take it as it is, writing on a page. Screaming never changed anyone's mind, non-sequitor one liners never changed anyone's mind.

to attract other like-minded folks (i.e. "I just watched the last episode of _____ and I'm really going to miss that show" or "Anyone else here a _____ fan? I love them!") and someone just HAS to reply just to tell everyone how stupid it is. What is the point of that?

It's one thing if OP asks "What do you think about _____?" or "I'm thinking of seeing _________ tonight, is it good?" But if the OP clearly just wants to share their enthusiasm, why is it necessary to rain on their parade? That drives me nuts.

140. That's at the top of my list.
On occasion I will start a thread about, say, a reality TV show that I like. It is quite clear in the subject line that the thread is about a TV show so no one is getting duped into clicking on the thread but someone will just have to come onto the thread to say how stupid the show is or to tell me to destroy my TV before it rots my brain or something like that. I hate that shit.

108. GD
and most of the people in there. Especially the self-proclaimed leaders who offer nothing but an obviously naive thought and a stupid photoshop. I'm not naming any names, I might get trashed on some blog for being unsupportive to the cause. Oh, and conspiracy theorists who are certain nuclear armageddon is near. Hero worship, and the subsequent shitting on of said hero.

145. It's undignified
It suggests one is either a child bride (ick) or an adult woman making baby-talk in public (double ick).

139. I agree
It sounds so suburban and white, very Tupperware and PTA. Too cutesy. I can't pin why, but it ALWAYS bothered me, long before the internet came along. :puke:

131. People who get easily offended and then say they're leaving
then comeback months later with another DU user name after their sulk and pretend that they have never been here before. It's the internet for christ sake. And if you do come back be man or woman enough to come back with your original DU name and don't lie about never being here before.

just a pet peeve!

143. I second the hero worship pet peeve
Blind adoration is no more attractive for the "left" than it is for the Bush-worshipping freepers. Also, the tendency to lionize a person one day and villainize them the next is beyond stupefying.

148. When somebody says to listen or watch so-and-so on live now!!!!
Listen to Bill Clinton on Air America now!!!!

Watch Joe Wilson on CNN now!!!!!

Barbara Boxer kicking ass on CSPAN2 now!!!!!

Then, the first 10+ posters all have some variety of "he/she is doing great / kicking ass / awesome" and then absolutely NO DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

I don't know how many times I've asked for a summary of what is being said or what the topic is.

Please, if you can post that somebody important is on the air, try to provide a summary of what was said.

150. People posting "Link? nt" for the most OBVIOUS stuff in the world....
For example:

Poster 1: The sky is blue

Poster 2: Link?

I mean for the love of god. I understand there are plenty of claims made that deserve to have credible links/information to back it up as they are made. But in some cases would it kill people to just google it themselves? It takes what? Less than a second?

oh, and in advance of any smart asses that want to respond to this with "link? nt" here's an advance :spank:

(nothing against smart asses. I love youse guys. :loveya: )
