I can understand the "linking and zapping bandwidth" part of it, but how many of these sites actually OWN the content they post. We're talking celebrity pictures in this case, and I believe on IMDB, they're all movie screencaps. IMDB doesn't have any ownership of that content, so they shouldn't be dicks about it.

The MPAA is very strict about screen captures. For example, a DVD playing in OS seX only captures a black screen when doing a screen grab while a DVD is playing.. (the dvd is only blocked) For some odd fucking reason they really care about this stupid shit.

First off, IMDB was a cooperative effort of thousands of internet users and dates back before graphical web interfaes were in common use, ie gopher and lynx

Secondly, imagine the bandwidth it takes just to run it as it is, much less let every script kiddie on the planet put a picture of Steve Reeves on their homepage on IMDB's dime.

Third, I am sure this is some kind of agreement with the owners... and yes there are owners of even movie grabs... to at least require an IQ of warm piss to get the pictures.

To be honest, I don't really blame IMDB for doing this. I've seen many people harvest pictures from others for their own commercial web pages, or link to them to save bandwidth. At least some of the pictures aren't screen captures, but professional ones from galleries, which they (presumably) have permission to use, but have to make an effort to not allow commercial redistribution. The technique they use makes it a little more difficult to save something for personal use, but will thwart whole-scale reaping of picture archives by 'bots.
