2. Is there a zoo in N.O.?
Pretty grim thought - I hate to think of the poor animals in these situations. I feel for the people obviously and hope no one is hurt but there are always a lot of animals left to fend for themselves.

26. The Audobon Zoo is one of the most beautiful
and it has several major preservation programs going on. I hope they have a plan formulated for getting the animals out.

18. How? If they are currently there they are as good as dead.
We are talking 15 ft of water and almost 200 mile an hour winds.

8. I heard a report that the aquarium in BILOXI, MI was relocating
their dolphins and other marine life, to a local hotel swimming pool! Seriously, it seems the aquarium had these animals in an outdoor aquatic "pen" which would obviously be totally vulnerable. They are converting the swimming pool to a saltwater environment and shipping them over there.

At least they are trying, I'll give them that. I am cringing for those animals at the NO zoo. Especially the apes.....(can't help it, they are my soft spot).

9. I am worrying right along with you
Some people may make fun or be agitated at our seeming lack of care for children and the elderly, but animals can truly not speak for themselves and are quite helpless. You are a very warmhearted person to have these concerns.

10. heres a mapquest of where the zoo is... when you cage an animal
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 07:46 PM by henslee
you take responsibility for that animal's life... you must at any cost, have a contiingency plan for events like this. I mean, we all knew it was coming. I know its a logistical nightmare but I hope they can save some animals.

I hate tragedy, whether it effects critters or people, it just makes me sad :( :( :(

14. I'm thinking that since the Zoo was built after Betsy
that there is a contingency plan for an ass kicking hurricane. I just went thru the site looking for ant mention and found none, but I'd be shocked if they had no plan to keep the animals safe. It is a benchmark zoo habitat.

17. I've been worrying about zoos and shelters since last night....
I'm glad the zoo has a staff that stays even in the event of a Cat. 5.

Damn. This is the worst part - the innocents, those who are trapped (animals and people).

19. Uh-oh.
"Prior to a storm's arrival, animals would be secured in night houses, barns and other buildings, most of which, such as Asian Domain and World of Primates, are well constructed..."

They're fucked. Is the zoo within the city itself? Tell me they're at least on higher ground.

22. I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.
I'm not even in danger, and I'm just so keyed up I could bust. It's like knowing a train is going to wreck and knowing there's nothing you can do.

23. I just saw on CNN they had evacuated some dolphins from the
aquariums in near the waterfront and put them in hotel pools 45 miles away. They are playing with balls and have a trainer nearby.

29. Here's a little update for you guys from the webpage.
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 04:56 PM by WeRQ4U
http://www.auduboninstitute.org/news/02_1100_zoo_hurricane.htm

Snip

"Audubon Zoo has a well devised plan to deal with the threat of a hurricane making landfall in the vicinity of New Orleans. In 1993 Audubon Zoo staff met with the General Curator from the Miami Zoo in order to upgrade our hurricane preparedness. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew devastated the greater Miami area, including the zoo, and we incorporated the Miami Zoo's experience and recommendations into our plan."

looks like it might be OK. Better than nothing. Hope that helps.

EDIT: Oops, I didn't realize that someone else had linked to this site. Oh well, not as helpful as I thought. lol.
