The EMS, Fire, Police, hospital, and National Guard people have to put their lives and families on hold during an emergency for a long time to help folks out. While sitting in the heat with no air, or sitting in gas lines in the heat can really suck, these folks are out in it directing traffic, handing the ice out, stopping looters, and responding to medical emergencies. People can get pretty cranky after a hurricane, and that makes the job even more challenging.

Let's remember these folks, and keep them in our hearts.

Those folks are going to be dog tired from work, hopefully they will have homes to rest their heads.

Coast Guard Auxiliary

Urban Search and Rescue Corps
Ham Radio (Radio Amateur Civilian Emergency Service)
Volunteer Fire Departments
Volunteer Ambulance Corps

They don't get paid - they are doing it to serve their communities.

9. I dispatched for a few years.

Public service is in my mind every time something like this happens. They never get enough credit for what they do-especially EMS and 9-1-1 dispatch(they both tend to be overlooked).

10. Shout out to your water department workers, too! They are going to be

overwhelmed, and it seems as though they are often an "expendable (as in too easily downsized) department in city government.

I'm a proud AFSCME supporter, although I'm inelegible for membership, and keeping my brothers and sisters in mind as they face this.
