Found an abandoned puppy yesterday

No collar, hungry and full of mange.

Taking him to the vet on Monday.

I'm no PETA supporter but this just infuriates me that someone would abandon a helpless 3 month old puppy in the middle of nowhere.

15. We had our accidental pet for almost 13 years...

She was also abandoned and we didn't even think she was going to make it at first... we nursed her back to health. She was the most gentile pup and playful little thing up to her last six months (her hip gave way at that point, from catching a frizbee at 12!)....

What a wonderful pet she was. :-)

7. We've already got two dogs

and one of them was abandoned also. The other was a product of people not spaying their pets.

I don't think we can keep a 3rd one.

I took in a stray cat in early February and she had 5 kittens in March. I've only been able to find homes for two of them, so I'm kind of stuck with a whopping total of 6 cats. I love them all, but damn they're a lot of work. And money.

but 6 is my usual number. Perhaps if and when I have my own home, I'll have more. If it ever happens, I might even consider a dog.

I hope the little one finds a good, permanent home.

23. My local c-store owner, a great guy who hates cats

begged me to take in a kitty.

Now I have her, and her three little ones.

She never went outdoors after coming to my house, and she was so tiny. I never suspected she was pregnant until right before she delivered. Thank goodness only three.

8. Good for you. We have 3 dogs that showed up abandoned & sick

people 'dump' them out here around our lakeside community. Many of them are rescued like you're doing but quite a few get run over, die of starvation or shot by someone (including us) because almost everyone has at least 1 or many but we just can't absorb them all and there is no animal control out here, which wouldn't much matter because they'd just be euthanized anyway. It just breaks my heart.

after you visit the vet, find a good animal rescue group that will take the pup and place it in a good home where they know how to care for puppies and where they love dogs.

13. I've re-homed 27 abandoned dogs and cats in the last 6-1/2 years.

FABULOUS that you have a rescue group. We didn't really have that luxury, so this is my usual routine:

1. Take them to the Vet and go ahead and get them spayed/neutered. My vet finally started giving me a nice discount on the rescue animals.

2. Kept them separate from my 3 dogs and 2 cats (in a large kennel we made ourselves, complete with dog house), only because I didn't want the rescue dog learning any bad havits from my crew. I got them out for exercise and bathroom breaks usually 5 times a day, and tried to spend time socializing them and training them. This was always the fun part, tho a bit demanding time-wise.

3. As soon as I'd identified what breed(s) they were, put a free ad in the Atlanta Advertiser (free if the animal is free), and also in a little local advertising circular in my area.

I ALWAYS had way more calls than I had dogs or kittens. (Of course, "Free" is a very good price. :D ) My ad would include breed, details (age, sex, shots, neutered/spayed), and one sentence really selling the dog based on its personality and characrtristics. Something like, "Playful, loves being with people, will be great with children." Or perhaps, "Frisky, independent, extremely intelligent." Whatever seemed to fit.

You are a wonderful person for doing this. I wish there were millions more like you. I hope you get a goodly amount of joy from your efforts. I have always enjoyed the several weeks I had with my rescue animals before I found them good homes, and each one still has a special place in my heaert.

But I have to question the "free" part. In many areas, dog fighters will get free dogs to use as bait. Or bunchers take them to sell to laboratories. An adoption fee, even nominal, can help screen them out. Not to mention it helps cover your expenses.

Actually, you have a good point, but I feel very good about all the placements I've made, all of which were with wonderful families I felt privileged to meet. You also have to remember that this old lady gets very tired with the pet management involved, and by the time I've gone thru the whole routine (which takes several weeks), I NEED for them to be gone. Five times a day, I have to bring my dogs into the house, and get the foster dog out for exercise, business, play and training. It's actually quite a burden after a while.

17. My daughter and I found a very skinny kitty.....

about 2 years ago took him to a no-kill shelter (wasn't sure what his problem was, didn't want to expose our cat)any way found out he was blind (reason he was so skinny couldn't find food) also was epileptic.Happy ending: he is now the "baby" of a prominent doctors wife. He winters in Arizona, she even remodeled some of her house for him(he kept getting stuck in certain places). :thumbsup:

18. Our abandon puppy, Lucky

has been with us for 12yrs now. We were building our house , in the woods, and heard her cries. She is a mixed Lab and Husky, our security system. We just love her and spoil her! Best thing that could have happen to us.

19. We have an abandoned dog...

She has a problem with her esophagus and can't hold food down unless you feed her while she's upright (put the food on your lap and let her eat sitting on her haunches) and then hold her up for about 15 minutes afterward so she can digest. We have to do this twice every day, for the rest of her life.

She probably wasn't diagnosed when the original owners had her, and so she likely was throwing up a lot. She also is scared of her own shadow, so I'm guessing she was abused in some way for all of her "accidents."

She's a wonderful loving dog, the sweetest black lab you would ever meet. She was left in a field.

We are lucky to have her in our lives, though she's a lot of work. It seems like no one ever played with her, either, because she doesn't know how to catch a ball. We're teaching her. :)
