Just what would be considered a man's "dress shirt?"

Is that just a white shirt with collar and cuffs - or are you referring to a dress shirt like that would go with a tux.

Can you tell I don't know much about men's clothes?

You got it right on the first try. A dress shirt is occasionally called a "fitted shirt". The classic is white, with a non-flared collar and long sleeves with single buttons only.

The shirt that goes with a tux is called something else. Since I've never had occasion to wear a tux, I'm clueless as to its name.

2. In my experience...and I could be wrong...but I don't think so...

A man's dress shirt is NOT the one he wears with a tux...

But it IS a shirt with collar and cuffs that he would wear with a suit or some such...perhaps with a sports coat or jacket and tie...

3. Any shirt

with collar and cuffs and can be worn with a tie. Those Hollywood types have been brazen enough in the past to wear a collarless shirt with their tuxes. A formal shirt would be worn with a tux and usually has something quite foo-foo about it (ruffles, pleats, tucks, etc.).

All that said, it's just a bunch of subjective, cultural ideas that mean little. Wearing the "right" shirt does show that you are at least interested in appearing to play the game.
