Crowe Slams Celebrity Campaigners

Russell Crowe has launched a scathing attack on A-list charity campaigners including Bono and Sir Bob Geldof - because he believes they only want publicity. The Antipodean actor regularly donates to charity outside of the glare of the media spotlight and urges other stars to give quietly without publicly martyring themselves. He says, "I do my bit to improve the world but I think it's very important to get things done on the quiet. I'm sick to death of famous people standing up and using their celebrity to promote a cause. If I see a particular need, I do try to help. But there's a lot that can be achieved by putting a cheque in the right place and shutting up about it."

FUCK YOU RUSSELL CROWE - just because your publicity consists of beating up hotel clerks with telephone doesn't give you the right to judge others. I think it's great when actors take time from their celebrity-dom to use their name recognition to get others aware of what is going on around the world. Sir Bob Geldof surely didn't do LiveAid/8 for publicity because he's not exactly a household name with his musical career. As for Celebrities can do more by putting a check in the mail, I can almost guarentee that they do - but they also do good to make the rest of the world aware of what's happening like Poverty & AIDs in Africa!

Personally, I could survive if I never saw another Russell Crowe movie again. Go back to Australia and bash yourself on the head with a telephone!

7. And so is Naomi Watts, but she was there for Live 8
She introduced Keith Urban at the Philly Live 8 concert.

Fortunately Crowe is NOT typical of other actors from down-under

10. Thanks for posting that. Australians should not be classified
as non-political or dumb because of Crowe. Don't blame Australia for his stupidity...

6. I've yet to see The Insider only because of Crowe
the story is about how the tobacco industry hid information about the dangers of smoking and yet Crowe was a fricking hypocrite with his chain-smoking.

Yes, I know celebrities smoke but geez, you think playing the role of Russell Wigand might make him realize that he's killing himself with his habit!

19. I would think Sally Struthers position of being Sally Struthers is safe
She has nothing to worry about Bono taking over her roll of being Sally Struthers

:D

13. "L.A. Confidential" is pretty damn good
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 01:34 PM by ZombyWoof
And I would actually LOVE it if Bono shutted the fuck up. Crowe has a point, to a point. I can see some value in someone using their visibility (or in Geldof's case, exploiting the visibility of others) to lend aid to a cause. But that is NOT the be-all and end-all of charitable celebrity activity.

I like the way Paul Newman does it - sells a good product, and lets everyone in on the giving. Doesn't give long-winded sermons and make himself a pain in the ass. Surely, if there is a middle ground between Bono's way and Crowe's way, Newman found it long ago.

I think true chairty is anonymous. I agree with him on that point.

17. I would REALLY like Bono to STFU...
I am tired of being lectured to by multi-millionaire superstars on how I should live my life, or to what causes I should care about.

Bono, the minute you give up your billions, I'll give up my hundreds and we can all sit around a camp-fire in a commune somewhere and verbally masturbate one another about how bitchen we are and how much we care.... :eyes:

I agree that huge events that draw attention to a specific problem or issue are sometimes quite necessary, but as a celebrity you run the real risk of becoming the next Sally Struthers if you keep going on and on and on.....

because I'm such a great guy. Instead of those other saps, who actually WORK to bring in other donations by lending their notoriety, I give Quietly at the top of my lungs to the news media to show how they are self-serving while i am not.

15. Nice rant, and might I add
that if you simply mail a large check and make no noise, that accomplishes pretty much just what the dollars buy. If you make a lot of noise and raise funds you involve tons of flks, stir interest in the cuase and expand the impact of your dollars.

So, yeah, fuck you Russ and your simplistic view of the way folks should conduct their lives. When you get yourself under control we can discuss further how stupid you and your views are.

22. Ah, the road of less pain for an overpaid movie star: write a check.
Don't get your reputation soiled with any potential audiences by saying which side of the fence you chose to sit on.

Of course, Crowe keeps it quiet on the giving side, so we can't check to see who he gives to.

Message to Russell: if you really want to keep quiet about it, then don't bother to voice your complaints.

26. He can KMA on general principle
He was good in A Beautiful Mind, I'll give him that. I won't see Cinderella Man because it looks to be a dreadful film. Not that it's important but I thought he was from NZ. Either way I suspect he has bashed himself on the head with something, many times.

But then Russle played second fiddle to Hugo Weaving, a blind photographer.

I think he's originally a Kiwi, though.

I tell you what. I'll go back to NZ, or even Oz in his steed. I'll fly steerage. You can send Russell to Crawford. We save money and everybody's happy.

Activism is about doing. Anyone can give money. I just call that a guilt fee. Activism means you have a stake in the outcome.
