2. I had this discussion just last week! It turns out that the template is

female!! All embryos have only female external characteristics for the first six weeks of life...so contrary to that Adam's rib fairy tale, the male is derived from the female.
The nipples are left over from that original state of femaleness.

My question was more of a practical one: women need them for breast feeding, but there's no male equivalent for that, so it just seems odd that they would have them.
