there's a law against it or anything. But squirrels are often carriers of diseases so it would be dangerous to try to catch one and keep it as a pet.

Although it depends on the species. Native wildlife is usually illegal to keep as pets, but Southern Flying Squirrels are becoming a common exotic pet, usually for under $300.

On edit: If you just like the squirrel personality, get a rat! Except for the tails, they are the same.

I asked this because we have noted abandoned baby squirrels in our neighborhood and have felt great pity but I guess our decision to leave them be was probably best.
