European per capita consumption of gas and diesel stood at 286 liters a year in 2001, compared to 1,624 in the US, according to IEA figures.

European Union regulations are forcing vehicle manufacturers to make their products even more efficient than they already are.

Though their primary motivation is to reduce CO2 emissions, in line with targets set by the Kyoto Protocol, bio-fuel and hybrid cars are still so rare that increased fuel efficiency is the fastest route to lower emissions, says Dolf Gielen, an expert at the IEA.

CO2 emissions from new European cars fell by 12 percent from 1995 to 2003, according to Mr. Gielen, and manufacturers have voluntarily pledged to reduce them by a further 14 per cent by 2008, he adds.

Just read that because of the Hurricane in the US, the prices here got a nice increase of around 4 cents (they use whatever they can get). 1,30¤ per liter here.

8. Another question

Has your petrol cost gone up as your km/liter has gone up. Just wondering if there is really any way for a consumer to win. Seems like your auto's get better miles/gallon according to the chart, but you also pay 2X to 3X in cost as well.

Interesting question but I think that petrol was for quite a long time (as long as I can remember) way cheaper in the US than in several European countries like France, GB or Germany.
In the last years (or decades) petrol costs increased here and they increased in the US.
I am no expert but I would suppose that there are other reasons for this development.

= 0.41869 * 3.7852 = Wait a sec this can't be right - US$ 1.58/gallon!

15. Gas in Europe costs roughly the same as in the US.

Gas really isn't any more expensive in Europe than in the United States. They are closer to the Middle East, and they have the North Sea fields, so transportation costs are pretty low.

On the other hand, gas is TAXED at a much much higher rate than here, so the amount the consumer has to pay is higher.
