re: Hurricane Katrina
Some people had to abandon their pets because they weren't allowed in shelters.

1. No well in hell I'd leave my dog to die. |
|
No way. This is not to say those who did were wrong or evil or bad or whatever. Just, for me, just...no freaking way.

I sent a donation to Noah's Wish - the rescue organization this am. I couldn't leave my 5 dogs, that's for sure.

4. Unfortunately this happens with most hurricanes |

Shelters and hotels have limited pet policies which put pet owners in the proverbial rock/hard place situation.
For many pet owners they might not have the ability to afford a hotel where pets are accepted and shelters usually don't have the ability to shelter pets when so many people need a place to stay.

I have no solution. I suppose if Delaware was ever hit with a major storm like that I would just keep driving in my car until I was far enough away from the storm and sleep in the vehicle if necessary. Maybe if I found an above level parking garage I might be safe through the storm

5. There is a national pet rescue group... |
|
who specializes in going into disaster areas like NO and retrieving any pets/animals they can find. I don't know the name, off hand, but I have no dount they will be there as soon as they can. I've seen reports on them in the past and the work they do is amazing.
A lot of animals manage to survive the original disaster and are left without food/water in the following weeks. Animals are tough creatures -- they can withstand long bouts without food/water far better than humans can.
I hope we'll be seeing the stories of pet rescues soon.
And this is a great reminder for those of us who live in areas prone to disasters to plan for our pets survivial as well as our own.

7. I can almost handle the images of all the people.... |
|
clinging to their roof, or wading through the waters, but seeing that seal who was swept away from the aquarium and the copper colored dog just sitting on the top of an island of debris just fucking kills me.
