Man, I feel bad for people who can't read

I'm watching the Jane Pauley show - totally by accident - and it's about illiteracy. She has Curtis Aikens on, the famous chef who writes cookbooks now, who didn't learn to read until he realized at age 26 that his whole life was suffering.

Also amazing to hear his stories about how he managed to get through high school, do business, start his own grocery store, and do all sorts of things without ever letting people know that he couldn't read.

Amazing, and really sad.

It's amazing how many folks can't read. I'm glad I can read. With many members of my family who had to struggle to learn it's made me more thankful.

3. I simply can't imagine not being able to read a novel, or a play,

or even a letter from a friend or a birthday card or, even more importantly, big warning signs and directions for medicine and dangerous chemicals...

Reading brings so much pleasure to my life, I can't imagine not being able to.

2. Nearly every city has at least one literacy

program. The one I was involved with asked for just a couple hours per week.

I wound up trying to teach a guy to read better so he could study to pass his electrician's test to help feed his family.

4. They said on the show that it only takes about $100 to teach

someone to read.

Said that if you can't donate a few hours, all it takes is $100 donation, and that will guarantee someone will be able to read.

Amazing.

Sure would be nice if we'd spend the $100 while the people are in, say, Kindergarten - twelfth grade, and teach them to fucking read there.
